  • [01] Weekly Cabinet meeting

    Romanian Government spokesman Rasvan Popescu has told a press conference on Thursday that the Government adopted the draft law establishing the basic salaries for workers with state-financed institutions and officials's bonuses. The Government has also approved the draft law on the security of secret reports, and the draft law entiteling the Cabinet to issue ordinances during the MPs' holiday. The spJkesman has informed that the Government submitted to Parliament a package of laws on reforms while indicating that the legal power shoulf get further support. The Government has asked the two Houses in Parliament to finalise debates over laws under emergency regime. According to the same source, a future extraodinary session in Parliament may be considered. RADOR

    [02] PNL press communique

    PNL first vicepresident Valeriu Stoica has told a press conference on Thursday that the National Liberal Party (PNL) assumed every responsibility as member of the Cabinet since December 1996, and more, it renounced its own identity to the benefit of the Democratic Convention in Romania (CDR) and the governing coalition as a whole. PNL says recent regretable events indicate however that some parties and officials in the governing coalition limited themselves from the actions and legal initiatives the Government undertook. PNL reminds its coalition partners that the violation of the coalition's guiJelines may lead to a new political crisis and asks all MP groups of the majority to support the Vasile Cabinet in its efforts to achieve the governing programme. Referring to recent demands put forward by the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), the PNL vicepresident said the coalition leaders did not surrender, but only complied with the protocol already agreed.     [03] PD and PDSR expected to meet again

    The vicepresident of the Democratic Party (PD), Bogdan Niculescu-Duvaz, told a press conference on Thursday that his party and the opposition Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR) were expected to meet again in the next few days. PD ministers Traian Basescu and Radu Berceanu are to present the PDSR MP group with the restructuring programme of autonomous utilities. Mr Duvas has mentioned the PD previously informed its main coalition partner - the Christian Democrat National Peasant Party (PNTCD) - that it was about to meet PDSR representatives. He howevJr stopped short of mentioning what was the PNTCD reaction to the news. He explained that, at least for the time being, a social-democrat pole was still not expected to be established through an alleged alliance between the PD and PDSR. RADOR

    [04] National Education Ministry communique

    RRA, the Romanian Ministry for National Education (MEN) says the demands the Hungarian community put forward concerning the setting up of a Hungarian language teaching university - solutions based on both ethnic integration or separation - were unproductive for all parties involved. Education Minister Andrei Marga, who has actually signed the communique, believes that multicultural structures are most accurate. The reform of the educational system is providing solutions to all sorts of cultural problems, the Hungarian community's claims included. RADOR

    [05] PSDR press conference

    The leadership of the Romanian Social Democrat Party (PSDR) believes the Government should have the political will to fight Jll obstacles, whatever big they were, and achieve the restructuring programme of autonomous utilities. PSDR Vicepresident Smaranda Dobrescu has told a press conference on Thursday that the RENEL restructuring ( ed.n. RENEL - Romanian national energy supplier) would break its monopoly and competition would lead to lower prices in economy. RADOR

    [06] Further debates over art. 20 in the law allowing access to former Securitate files

    At the Senate session on Thursday, PNTCD Senator Corneliu Turianu said the article 20 in the law allowing access to your own former Securitate file and the disclosure of the institution as political police should be adopted. The article referres to the transfer of all Securitate records in the archives of ministries and SRI (ed.n. Romanian Intellgence Service) to the National Council for Studies of Former Securitate Archives. Mr Turianu said he could not understand how could the legal commission in the Senate reject the article when, only a few months agoJ it had approved it. The senator believes that preserving the former Securitate files in the archives of ministries and SRI would make their examination very difficult, and today officials - alleged former informers - would feel protected.     [07] Cartel Alfa announcement of protest rally and march

    The vicepresident of CNS Cartel Alfa trade union federation, Romulus Nita, has expressed his dicontent with the way some Government members considered the trade union demands as stipualted in the protocol signed in October '97. The trade union leader said the law on the labour court, the law concerning securities for professional risk and the support of investment programmes for mainly state-financed economic agents were some of the demands the Government still did not answer. Therefore, the Alfa Cartel will organise a rally in the Victoria Plaza on June 16, then followed by a protest march. RADOR

    [08] President Constantinescu on a visit to the US

    While at the University of ColumbiaJ New York on Wednesday, Romanian President Emil Constantinescu has pointed out his country's geographical and historical position in Europe which, as he put it, was a "natural bridge" connecting the central with the eastern and south-eastern regions of the continent. He believes that such geopolitical conditions established Romania as an ideal candidate for NATO membership. The president has also mentioned Romania's good relations with the three countries recently allowed to join NATO - Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. RADOR

    [09] PNTCD leader Ion Diaconescu left for Stockholm

    The speaker of the Romanian House of Deputies, PNTCD leader Ion Diaconescu, has left for Stockholm on Thursday to attend the Conference of European Parliament Speakers on June 12-13. The Romanian delegation also includes the Secretary General of the House of Deputies, Lucian Mihai. While at the Otopeni International Airport, Mr Diaconescu stopped short of making any statements to the press, the RRA mentiJned. RADOR

    [10] International seminar on "EU Build Up Along with Romania"

    The session of the international seminar on "EU Build Up Along with Romania" has resumed at the Round Hall of the Intercontinental Hotel in Bucharest on Thursday. The debates included issues concerning Romania's economic and social situation. In the opening speech, former prime minister Victor Ciorbea has presented participants with a report of his former Cabinet's activity in an attempt to point out its goodwill efforts. The PNTCD leader has insisted on property rights reform by both the Government and Parliament because, as he put it, "the way our society was depended on the sort of property we would like to promote". The head of the European Popular Party (EPP) parliamentary group, Wilfried Marthens, and the president of the Christian Democrat European Union (CDEU), Wim van Weltzen, have also attended the session.     [11] RRA was awarded the Golden Medal of ROMEXPO

    An advertising media awards ceremony haJ taken place at the SC ROMEXPO headquarters in Bucharest. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI (RRA) was awarded the Golden Medal for its reporting of the events at TIBCO '98 - the International Fair of Consumer Goods on May 21-27 (specialised exhibitions, autoexpotechnica and sound & light). RADIO ROMANIA INTERNATIONAL (RRI) was also awarded for its 17 language broadcast of the events at TIBCO'98. RADOR
