  • [01] PNTCD President Ion Diaconescu agrees with extension of parliamentary session after July 1

The President of the ruling Christian Democrat National Peasant Party (PNTCD) and Speaker of the Romanian House of Deputies, Ion Diaconescu says the parliamentary session may be extended after July 1. The PNTCD leader told a press conference on Monday that the Parliament should designate the members in the Administration Council of the National Bank of Romania (BNR), and the members in the Administration Council of the Romanian Television (TVR) by the end of this months. The structure of the Constitutional Court should be also decided by the end of the month, Mr Diaconescu said. The PNTCD leader stopped however short of making any comments about recent statements of an alleged electoral agreement between the ruling Democratic Party (PD) and the opposition Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR) during the elections for the City Hall in Bucharest. [02] Deputy Adrian Vilau admits he worked with former Securitate

PD Deputy Adrian Vilau has admitted he was an informer of the former Securitate services (ed.n. Romanian former communist political police) for some time, but he insisted that, despite the PD's decision to withdraw its political support, he did not intend to quit the job of chief commisioner for the control of Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) in the House of Deputies. "I confirm that the document in the press was real. I have signed such a declaration in 1984 while still a student in my first year", Mr Vilau declared. When asked how many reports did he sign, he replied: "I wrote three reports and I would be pleased if they were also to be published by the press. I wrote three reports of three of my colleagues who were about to travel abroad". Rador

[03] Senator Corneliu Vadim Tudor's reaction to reports in "Ziua" of his alleged cooperation with former Securitate services

"I was previously warned that people at the Cotroceni Palace (ed.n. Romanian presidential residence) were trying to imagine the most amazing fantasies about me in their attempt to keep my mouth shut. Everything is an obvious fake. I have actually asked Professor Mircea Ghiordunescu, I have even discussed with him the other night, I have also officially sumbitted my written demand urging the SRI (ed.n. Romanian Intelligence Service) to express its position about all these things, and I hope it would be these diversionists who would be condemned, and not me. General Ion Coman and General Iulian Vlad and General Aron Bordea have repeatedly confirmed, speaking or writing, that Vadim Tudor never was an informer of the Securitate". These are excerpts from the statement Senator Vadim Tudor, a far right hardliner and the leader of the Greater Romania Party (PRM). Rador

[05] PNTCD leader believes UDMR demand is reasonable

PNTCD leader Ion Diaconescu said the setting up of a Hungarian language teaching university in Cluj did not violate the higher education autonomy. At a press conference on Monday, Mr Diaconescu informed that some of the demands made by the Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) had been answered at a meeting last week. Mr Diaconescu said the UDMR demand of a Hungarian language teaching university was reasonable. He has also announced that, following discussions, a commission was to be set up in order to examine ways and opportunities for a future Hungarian university in Romania. Rador

50 years ago, on June 11, Romania and the State of Israel have decided to establish diplomatic relations. On the occasion of the 50-th anniversary, Romanian PresideJt Emil Constantinescu sent a message to his Israeli counterpart Ezer Waizman recalling that Romania was one of the first countries in the world to recognise the State of Israel almost immediately after its declaration of indpendence in 1948. The Romanian president pointed out that the diplomatic relations between the two countries never broke up since then. In his message to the Romanian president, Mr Waizman has praised the friendship and goodwill Romania has proved to Israel, and expressed his support for closer relations between the two countries. At a meeting under the auspices of the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE), the Israeli Ambassador to Bucharest, His Excellency Abraham Milo, said that, according to the Jewish philosophy, the age of 50 was the age of councellors, and one could say that relations between the two people reached their maturity.
