VACANCY NOTICE

Member States of EMBL (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) are advised that applications are being sought for the following position at the Laboratory's Outstation in Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK:

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMMER

The European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) is an Outstation of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). The EMBL headquarters is situated in Heidelberg, Germany. The EBI is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Hinxton, Cambridge, UK where it shares the site with the Sanger Centre (Wellcome Trust/MRC) and Human Genome Resource Centre (MRC). The services of the Institute include the EMBL Nucleotide Sequence Database, prepared in collaboration with the US GenBank group and the DNA Data Bank of Japan. It also maintains the SWISS-PROT Protein Sequence Data Bank, in collaboration with Dr. Amos Bairoch, of the University of Geneva. Alongside these services the Institute carries out basic research in Bioinformatics, with particular emphasis on genome analysis and structural biology.

Grade : 6-7, depending on age, qualifications and experience

Duty Station : Hinxton, near Cambridge, UK

Date of Start: As soon as possible

Job Description: The research activities of the group focus on the development of knowledge bases for the representation of molecular function and comparative genomics. The scientific programmer is expected to contribute to the design and implementation of computational systems relevant to this area. An essential aspect of the anticipated work will involve knowledge integration of heterogeneous data from various resources, such as molecular structure or literature databases.

Qualifications and Experience: The successful applicant is expected to have a University degree in Computer Science or Engineering, and several years of programming experience. Knowledge of UNIX and good programming skills are required. Expertise in database / knowledge base technology is highly desirable. Experience with AI methods and tools, and in particular with knowledge representation and knowledge engineering, and client/server systems development are all desirable, as is a general interest in molecular biology and biological databases.

Contract : An initial contract of 3 years' duration will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
