    There was congestion at Piraeus port today, as the second wave of holidaymakers left Athens for their summer vacations on the islands. Outbound traffic was also heavy on the two national roads, where traffic police have taken special measures to curb road accidents.

    [02] Blair's government in trouble over scientist's suicide

    British Prime Minister Tony Blair's government has been shaken to the core by the death of a scientist involved in a bitter row between the BBC and the Labour administration, over the Iraq war. Visiting Japan, Blair today urged the media to avoid accusations over the apparent suicide of Dr. David Kelly, a former United Nations weapons inspector.

    A partly cloudy day is forecast for the mainland and the northern Aegean, and fine weather for the rest of the country.

    Temperatures in Athens will range from 23 to 33 degrees centigrade, and in Thessaloniki from 19 to 28 degrees.

    [04] Turkish forces in Cyprus prepare for tomorrow's anniversary

    The Turkish occupation forces in Cyprus are preparing for tomorrow's anniversary of the Turkish invasion of the island, with a parade and other celebrations. Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is reportedly in favour of the events, having sent a letter to Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash describing the invasion as a "peaceful operation," which laid down the foundations for the two communities on the island to co-exist, in a climate of security and peace.

    [05] Pay increases for civil servants

    Increases ranging from 4.1% to 6.4% have been provided for in the new salary system for both active and retired civil servants, to come into force on January 1, 2004. The first installment of retrospective payments for family allowances will also be paid on that date.
