[02] Cyprus' accession to the EU and Greek-Turkish relations
Gunther Verheugen, European Union (EU) Commissioner responsible for the
Unions enlargement, stated recently that Cyprus' accession to the EU is
not associated with a Cyprus settlement. Meanwhile, a relative report
of the EU quotes that Turkey does not fulfil the accession requirements
and calls on Ankara to contribute in resolving the Cyprus issue, while
special reference is also made to human rights and also Greek-Turkish
relations. In a relative development, the Greek Foreign Minister
George Papandreou pointed out at the UN General Assembly that the
Cyprus dispute is a brake on Greek-Turkish relations.
[03] Polytechnic uprising anniversary on November 17th
Three day events will start tomorrow for the anniversary of the
Polytechnic uprising.
[04] Bi-ministerial meeting on Olympic projects
The course of the Olympic works for 2004, will be in the agenda of a
bi-ministerial meeting today. Earlier the New Democracy (ND) party
leader Kostas Karamanlis will have a meeting with the partys
coordinators on the same issue.
[05] PASOK deputy interviewed on NET program
Speaking in a program of Nenia Glypti on the state television channel
NET-New Greek Television, Former Minister and presently PASOK deputy of
Thessaloniki, Stelios Papathemelis left open the possibility of walking
out from the ranks of the ruling party.
[06] Changes in pensions and family allowances
This afternoon, Prime Minister Kostas Simitis will have a cooperation
meeting with the Minister of Finance and National Economy Nikos
Christodoulakis. Meanwhile, the undersecretary of finance and National
Economy George Floridis has confirmed that both spouses will receive
the family allowance in 2002, while the Civil Servants Union ADEDY is
proposing single pensions and a reduction of the retirement age limit
to 62.
[07] Farmers plan protest actions
Farmers begin a new round of protest actions starting today, while the
ND party is in favor of their demands, without condemning their plans
such as blocking roads. Commenting on the issue, Agriculture Minister
George Drys said "those who will attempt to play games at the expense
of the farmers will get the reply they need from the farmers
themselves".
[08] Athens bourse
On the Athens Stock Exchange, gains were recorded on Tuesday. The
general index rose by 1.00%, closing at 2.631,43 points, while the
volume of transactions was at 142 million Euro or 48 billion drachmas.
Of the stocks trading yesterday, 273 recorded gains and 56 had losses,
while the value of 33 remained unchanged.
