[01] PM Tsipras inaugurates Derveni tunnels, new sections of Olympia HighwayAfter opening a section of the Olympia Highway from Corinth to Kiato, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Friday also opened two new tunnels and a bridge crossing the Derveni River, on the Corinth-bound lanes of the same highway. The two tunnels measure 670 metres and 450 metres, respectively, each having two lanes, and also pass over the railway line at one end.In statements earlier, Tsipras said that the inauguration of the new infrastructure projects sent a strong message that it was now time for the country to get back on its feet. He also highlighted their importance for western Greece, noting that the sections of the Olympia Highway turned over for use on Friday were the result of an effort beginning more than a year ago. The prime minister commented on the results of the television licences tender and said this was the second message the government is sending out on Friday, within and outside Greece, that lawlessness has come to an end and all in Greece will now be equal before the law. He pledged that two thirds of the sums raised in the tender will be spent to support vulnerable social groups by the end of 2016 and the remaining third by the end of 2017, promising to give further details at the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF). Infrastructure, Transport and Networks Minister Christos Spirtzis commented that the "construction crews and projects being delivered" were doing the talking on this day. He also announced that, under new laws, no project will be contracted out before the necessary expropriations and archaeological service inspections were completed. Talking to the ANA, government spokeswoman Olga Gerovasili noted that the government had succeeded in unblocking projects that had been mired for years, while greatly reducing the cost of these major roadways for the country. "Within 2017 all the major road axes will be completed and the great inconvenience for a very large number of Greeks will be at an end," she added.
