[01] New Democracy on TV licences' tender resultThe government is celebrating today the definition of corruption, main opposition New Democracy (ND) spokesman Giorgos Koumoutsakos commenting the result of TV licences' tender.New Democracy has tabled a proposal with the Greek National Council for Radio and Television playing a central role while using the digital spectrum without a predetermined number of channels. If the proposal had been implemented, we would have more democracy, more information, more channels and higher revenues," he added. Koumoutsakos accused the government that chose the way of arbitrariness granting a limited number of licenses and excluding the Greek National Council for Radio and Television from the procedure. Referring to the price of the licences, he said: "The price was high, so high that raises questions. One gives 40, another one gives 70 and the other one who has offered 60 did not get a license. Oligopoly, especially in the media, bears the seed of corruption." [02] No harmonised legislation in EU on TV licences, says Commission spokesman SchinasBRUSSELS (AMNA/M. Aroni)--- European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas clarified that there is no harmonised legislation at EU level on TV licences.Asked on the result of the TV licences tender in Greece, Schinas said that the Commission has already stated its position on the matter reminding there is no harmonised legislation for the EU member states that are free to select to apply the TV licence regime according to the domestic demands and the community authorities provided by the treaties. Concluding, Schinas noted that the Commission takes into account the result of the tender for the TV licences in Greece adding that it is a procedure that brings additional revenues to the Greek state, something that is positive. [03] New TV landscape translates only to change of ownership, says KKEThe new page in the TV landscape only concerns the change of ownership and not the character and the content of the media, Communist Party KKE said in an annoucement on Friday after the conclusion of the tender for TV licences. The TV channels with the same and some new owners will not safeguard the people's right to information and entertainment or the media workers rights, the announcement added. The SYRIZA-ANEL government aimed to changes in the TV market share and create a friendly TV environment as former governments did, noted KKE adding that those referring to the 'safeguarding of the public interest, objectivity and pluralism in information are only ridiculous in the conditions that the capital state dominates and the TV channels remain under the capital's ownership that will use them for its own interest, noted KKE. [04] Exhibition on the elephant of Tilos in Athens UniversityA unique exhibition entitled "Elephas tiliensis. Dwarf and three-dimensional" was inaugurated at the Museum of Geology and Paleontology of the National University of Athens on Thursday evening. This is the elephant of Tilos, the last elephant of Europe that arrived on the island by swimming from Minor Asia 45,000 years ago, the Director of the Museum, Professor George Theodorou, explained to the Athens - Macedonian News Agency. The researchers were able to collect samples, to replicate them with CT scanners and laser scanners, to turn them into three-dimensional models, calculating the correct dimensions and then to print them in 3D. "This is an innovative, modern methodology that allowed us to get closer to an ideal form of Tilos' elephant and for the first time have a mounted three-dimensional skeleton," Theodorou added. Visitors have the opportunity to see an extinct amimal in three-dimensional form and be informed about the methodology of the excavations, the original material from excavations, as well as to compare the old methodoly of copying with modern methodology that allows the construction of mirror printing samples to scale. The director of the Museum of Geology and Paleontology of the National University of Athens, Professor George Theodorou, underlined that "the university has carried out excavations on Tilos from 1971 until today. We have a cave, Charkadio, discovered by Professor Nicholas Symeonidis. This cave is home to a lot of material on Tilos' elephants. We gave the name 'tiliensis' in 2007, because it disappeared in Tilos 3,500 years ago and came to Tilos at least 45,000 years ago." [05] Tourist arrivals on Rhodes at high levelsHotel reservations on Rhodes exceed 90 percent of the capacity, increasing optimism over an extended tourism season this year, according to recent data.Rhodes' tour operators and hoteliers estimated that the reservations would remain at high levels in the following weeks. On their part, hotel managers underlined that despite the increase in arrivals as a result of the fact that less people travel to Tunisia, Turkey and Egypt, the revenues remain at low levels because tourists are of low income. On top of that, all inclusive packages, as they said, have had a negative impact on the local market. Athens News Agency: News in English Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
