  • [01] Labour minister: 'We won't allow Pinochet's labour laws in Greece'

The government will not allow Chile's former dictator Augusto Pinochet's labour laws to be applied to Greece, Labour Minister George Katrougalos told Greek newspaper "RealNews" in an interview published on Sunday.

Katrougalos was referring to the reforms demanded by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on collective labour agreements. "Under no circumstances will we allow Pinochet's labour laws to be implemented in Greece," he was quoted as saying, adding that the government will not accept setting conditions for announcing strikes.

"A strike is an employee's last resort. We will defend it to the end. Under no circumstances will we accept employees not being able to defend themselves and claim [their rights], even more so in the current working jungle which we are trying to reverse in every possible way," he said.

Katrougalos also said unions should fund themselves so that they can be autonomous from the state, adding that it wouldn't be prudent to be funded by a contribution now collected by Greece's unemployment agency.

[02] Katerina Stefanidi awarded gold in pole vault in Rio

Athlete Katerina Stefanidi was officially awarded the gold medal in women's pole vault during a ceremony on Sunday morning, after jumping 4.85 metres in Rio's Olympics the day before.

She is the first Greek athlete to take top spot at this sport. Stefanidi was followed by USA's Sandi Morris and New Zealand's Eliza McCartney who took silver and bronze respectively.

She will carry the Greek flag on behalf of the country's delegation during the closing ceremony in Brazil.
