[03] EU Commissioner Avramopoulos on migration management; six migrants sent back toTurkey

EU member states can provide up to 8 billion euros over the next five years in order to support the agreements with third countries on migration management, European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos said on Wednesday.

Avramopoulos was addressing an event on the European Development Days held in Brussels.

"Last year we increased significantly the funding for the management of migration. We propose to further increase funding, starting with an aid of 500 million euros for the Africa Fund, an innovative tool that was founded last November in Valletta. We ask our member states to contribute to reach one billion euros," he said adding that "if EU member states join their forces, an amount of 8 billion euros can be allocated in order to support these agreements over the next five years."

Finally, he reiterated that the opening of legal routes for migrants is a necessary condition to combat undocumented migration. "This overcomes the relocation of those needing protection. Europe is not closing its borders to migrants. It has never done it and it will never do so," he said, adding that "an effective return and readmission policy is the most effective method of preventing the dangerous journeys of migrants and refugees."

Meanwhile, six Algerian migrants left on Thursday from the port of Mytilene for the port of Dikili, Turkey. The readmission process is held within the implementation of EU-Turkey agreement.

The migrants waived their right for political asylum which they had initially requested.
