  • [01] New overdue tax debt figure at 1.5 bln euros in November

New overdue tax debts to the state totalled 1.5 billion euros in November, raising the figure of new overdue tax debt to 11.833 billion euros in 2015, official figures revealed on Tuesday.

The general secretariat for public revenue, in a report, said overdue tax debt was 10.380 billion euros in October.

The 1.5 billion increase in overdue tax debt in November was one of the largest monthly debt increases in 2015 and reflected a heavy debt burden (property tax, income tax, car circulation fees) in the month.

Overdue tax debt to the state totaled 83.6 billion euros in November, up from 82.2 billion a month earlier, of which the so-called "efficient" debt - which shows greater possibiities of repayment - amounted to 7.2 billion euros.

[02] Frontex commences expanded operation on porous eastern Aegean sea borders

Frontex on Monday commenced the deployment of 293 staff members and 15 vessels to several eastern Aegean islands as part of the so-called "Poseidon Rapid Intervention" operation, which comes after the Greek government requested additional assistance earlier this month for its external borders in the Aegean.

The operation replaces the Joint Operation Poseidon Sea initiative, with a higher number of officers assisting in identifying and fingerprinting third country nationals that illegally land on Greek territory from neighboring Turkey, along with interpreters and forged document experts, the agency said in a press release. Poseidon Rapid Intervention aims to provide Greece with additional technical assistance in order to strengthen its border surveillance, registration and identification capacity.

Frontex said the number of border guards deployed will gradually increase to more 400 officers as well as additional vessels, vehicles and other equipment to assist national authorities in the management of the unprecedented migratory pressure on Greece's eastern sea borders.
