  • [01] New Democracy lashes out at government after data on overdue tax debts to state

Main opposition New Democracy on Tuesday accused the government of obsession, inability and irrelevance following the publication of the data regarding the new overdue tax debt to the state.

New overdue tax debt to the state totaled 1.5 billion euros in November, raising the amount of new overdue tax debt to 11.833 billion euros in 2015, official figures showed.

"Until a few days ago, the SYRIZA-ANEL coalition government celebrated because tax revenues increased and individuals' debt to the state was contained," New Democracy said "while the figures for the period January-November 2015 showed a spike of overdue debts," it added.

[02] 'Too much fuss about nothing,' says ANEL spokeswoman on conscription for women

The reactions caused by the opposition on the proposals made by Independent Greeks (ANEL) party leader Panos Kammenos on introducing conscription for women is "too much fuss about nothing", the party's spokeswoman Marina Chrysoveloni told a TV station on Tuesday.

Kammenos, who is National Defence Minister, said in an interview with Greek newspaper Ethnos on Sunday that women who want to join the police, the fire brigade or the coast guard should go through military training first. He also proposed voluntary military service for all other women, as well as the introduction of military high schools.

"It was the externalization of a thought by the Minister of National Defence; it has not proceeded further than that," she told Mega TV channel, adding that if and when this thought turns into a plan, then there will be a full briefing of the prime minister and a debate at the cabinet.

[03] Municipality of Athens to open heated areas for the homeless ahead of cold spell

The municipality of Athens is opening up a room and a municipal gym to shelter homeless people and vulnerable groups from the imminent bad weather, it was announced on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service warned that temperatures will drop significantly in the next 24 hours, with sleet and wind expected for most of the country and snow forecast for the mountainous and northern regions.

On Wednesday, the municipality said it will open at 10.00 a heated hall in the district of Kolonos (Lenorman & 35 Alexandrias streets) for the homeless who need a warm place to stay. On Thursday, the closed municipal gymnasium in the district of Rouf (Pireos & 69 Ehelidon streets) will also be available and will remain open for as long as it is required.

Municipal authorities along with volunteering organizations will also start informing homeless people about the availability of these places, while citizens are urged to contact authorities on 1595 in cases of emergency.
