  • [01] Strong earthquake jolts Lefkada; two dead, four injured

strong earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale jolted the Ionian island of Lefkada on Tuesday morning, resulting in two fatalities and several injuries.

A 60-year old woman died inside her home in the village of Ponti Vassilikis when the tremor dislodged a large rock from a hill, which struck one of the home's outer walls and fatally injured her.

Another woman died in the village of Athani.

There were also reports of widespread damage to the road network on the southwest part of the island.

According to the Geodynamic Institute in Athens, the tremor, which took place at 9:15 a.m. (7.15), was located in the sea region 25 kilometers off the island.

An aftershock measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was also recorded.

[02] Gov't to raise fee on lottery games in place of 23% VAT rate on private education‏

The Greek government will offset revenue from a scrapped plan to impose a 23-pct VAT on private education by raising a fee on lottery games operated by OPAP, according to an agreement reached between Greek officials and the country's creditors on Tuesday.

Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos and Economy Minister George Stathakis, speaking to reporters during a news conference, said the government will introduce at least one more equivalent measure to cover 100 million euros of the estimated 300 million euros that was initially budgeted from the VAT tax on private education.

Tsakalotos said that there were up to three other tax measures currently being examined to cover the 100 million euros, one of which included a 30-cent hike on taxes added to sold bottles of wines.
