  • [01] Olive oil consumption falling, survey shows‏

ANA/MPA---Olive oil consumption is on a decline in the domestic market in the last few years, as a reduced available income has lead consumers to cut spending even on basic food products, a survey by Infobank Hellastat said on Tuesday.

The survey, examining the domestic market of olive oil production showed that consumption of olive oil stabilized at 200,000 tons in the 2012-2013 period, and was expected to fall further in the current period.

This decline basically covers brand olive oil products, as consumers largely prefer to buy olive oil from producers. At the same time, consumption of labelled olive oil is constantly rising putting more pressure to brand producers.

Domestic olive oil production totaled 357,900 tons in 2012/2013, up 22 pct from the previous period, while production in the 2013/2014 period was projected to fall by 62 pct to 135,500 tons, hit by adverse weather conditions.

The survey analyzed the financial results of 110 enterprises in the sector, with a total turnover of 409.77 million euros in 2012, down 4.0 pct from the previous year. Operating earnings fell 7.0 pct to 28.17 million euros, while pre-tax earnings dropped 40 pct to 3.56 million euros.

[02] Greek unemployment remains highest in the EU‏

ANA/MPA---Greek unemployment rate eased to 26.8 pct of the workforce in March, from 26.9 pct in February, with the number of unemployed people totaling 1,275,000, Eurostat said on Tuesday.

In a report released here, the EU executive's statistics office said Greek unemployment rate remained the highest in the EU, followed by Spain with 25.1 pct (May figures), while Austria (4.7 pct), Germany (5.1 pct) and Malta (5.7 pct) recorded the lowest unemployment rates. In the EU, the unemployment rate eased to 10.3 pct in May from 10.4 pct in April, while in the Eurozone, the unemployment rate was unchanged at 11.6 pct.

The unemployment rate among men was 23.8 pct in March, from 23.9 pct in February and 30.6 pct among women from 30.7 pct in February. Unemployment among young people aged below 25 years old was 57.7 pct in March, up from 57.1 pct in February. In the Eurozone, the unemployment rate among men was 11.5 pct, among women 11.7 pct and among young people 23.3 pct. During the last 12 months, the unemployment rate fell in 21 member-states, it rose in six and remained unchanged in Austria.

[03] Greek PMI fell to 49.4 points in June‏

ANA/MPA---Greece's seasonally-adjusted Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to 49.4 points in June, from 51 in May, Markit said in a report on Tuesday.

The report noted that June figure was the lowest recorded since November 2013 and showed a slight deterioration in the health of the manufacturing sector in the country.

Production in Greek manufacturing units grew in June at the slowest pace in three months, reflecting a slightly decline in new orders after rising by a successive six months. Employment levels fell in June, after rising in the previous two months, while supply purchases by Greek manufacturers rose slightly in June.
