[01] UN: Greece seeks return of artworks to countries of origin

Greece has proposed to the United Nations' general assembly that cultural property should be restored to its country of origin.

Submitted as a draft resolution on November 2, the proposal was made by Greece's permanent representative at the UN, Adamantios Vasilakis.

A vote on the proposal is due in coming days.

"In recent years, the sensitivity of the world community has increased on the issue of the return of works of cultural heritage to their countries of origin, especially when they constitute the product of illegal trade," Vasilakis told the assembly.

"The phenomenon (of illegal trade in artworks) deprives peoples of a part of their historical past, while isolating the works from their natural, cultural and geographical base," he noted.

[02] Tarus, Ogushi win Athens Marathon

Tarus, 27, clocked in two hours, 17 minutes and 45 seconds, followed by a compatriot, Paul Lomol Lopio (2:18:07) in second place, and Habtamu Bekele of Ethiopia third (2:20:04). Tarus has a personal best of 2:10:10 from 2001.

Ogushi, also 27, finished in two hours forty minutes and 45 seconds, followed by Letay Hadish of Ethiopia (2:40:53) and Zinash Alemu of Ethiopia (2:42:02). Ogushi's personal best is 2:40:00

The victors received a traditional crown of wild olive and a monetary prize from the president of the republic, Karolos Papoulias, who attended the race.
