Wage rises in 2007 will be higher than this year under government
incomes policy, Finance Minister George Alogoskoufis said in an
interview published on Sunday.
The minister also told the Eleftherotypia newspaper that if the ruling
New Democracy party won general elections due in 2008, its priorities
would be overhauls of the social insurance system and the workings of
the state, accompanied by reform of the education system.
"The fiscal deficit has been lowered to a great degree in order to fall
below 3% of gross domestic product, and the government has succeeded in
maintaining high rates of growth," Alogoskoufis noted.
"The next step would be to achieve a balanced or slightly surplus
budget," he added.
