[01] Poul Nielson addresses the UNCTAD X Conference in Bangkok
In a speech made to the plenary session of the tenth United Nations
Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD X), the European Commissioner
in charge of Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, Poul Nielson,
stressed the need for an overall, coherent strategy designed to reduce
poverty and integrate devloping countries into the world economy. He called
for equal emphasis to be placed upon trade and aid in the approach towards
fundamental issues facing developing nations, stating : "Trade not aid has
often been the slogan, but this is a false escape from the duty of
solidarity. The true slogan should be trade and aid."
[02] Poul Nielson to visit Bangladesh from 20-22 February
The European Commissioner for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid,
Mr Poul Nielson, will visit Bangladesh from 20 to 22 February 2000.
Commissioner Nielson will meet with senior politicians, including the Prime
Minister, Ms Sheikh Hasina, as well as representatives of civil society.
Topics under discussion will include aspects of EU development cooperation
and humanitarian assistance to Bangladesh. Mr Nielson will also visit
several EU funded projects being implemented both by government agencies
and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO).
