[03] ECHO TV and radio awards: Commission highlights the plight of victims

An eye witness account of the massacres in Rwanda unfolding in front of them; the future seen through the eyes of a Bosnian child who simply walked down the wrong road, trod on a mine and lost his leg; and the horrific images of the carnage in Liberia: just three of the shortlisted entries for the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) TV and radio awards. These awards, announced in June, were open to broadcasters throughout the European Union, and were created to highlight the vital role played by broadcasters in raising public awareness of humanitarian issues. The winners will be announced at an event to be held at the Royal Kilmainham Hospital, Dublin, on 9 December in the presence of Mary Robinson, President of Ireland, and Commissioner Emma Bonino.

[04] SADC and EC sign regional indicative programme

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the European Community today in Windhoek, Namibia, signed a regional Indicative Programme worth ECU 121 million for a five-year period under the revised Lom IV Convention. The overall objective that will guide the regional programme of cooperation is to raise the standard of living and improve the quality of life in the region through sustained socio-economic SADC. Within this strategy the support of European Commission financing will be concentrated on two priority areas: infrastructure and services; trade, investment and finance.
