[01] Tobacco subsidies reform delay
BRUSSELS - The European Commission, divided over how far to go in reforming
the European Union's controversial tobacco subsidy programme, agreed on
Wednesday to postpone the decision for two weeks, Commission officials said.
[02] EU to rule on Thomson sale
BRUSSELS The European Commission - is to announce later on Wednesday or
Thursday that it has cleared the sale of Thomson SA to Lagardere and Daewoo
Electronics despite the French government's decision to cancel the deal.
[03] Silicon carbide deal ruling
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said officially on Wednesday that it had
banned the merger of the silicon carbide businesses of French glass maker
Saint-Gobain and Wacker-Chemie of Germany.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission will rule within weeks on a proposed 1.5
billion-Belgian-franc capital injection to rescue steel maker Forges de
Clabecq, Competition Commissioner Karel Van Miert said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had banned 30 million
marks in subsidies paid to east German fibreboard company Bestwood GmbH
because the local authorities who provided the aid failed to request EU
approval.

imports from Switzerland, because of fears over mad cow disease.
