British Minister: We look forward to seeing Greek Cypriot proposals

Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- Britain is looking forward to seeing Greek Cypriot proposals on moving the process for a Cyprus settlement forward, British Minister for Europe Denis MacShane has said.

He added that ''if we believe the proposals are reasonable and have a realistic chance of success, we will encourage the UN Secretary General to re-engage and put all our resources and influence behind finding a solution that is acceptable to all sides.''

In a statement on the occasion of his arrival in Cyprus this morning MacShane said that ''now that the Turkish Cypriots have turned a page on the past, we need to help them continue on the road towards Europe and reunification,'' noting that doing so will make a solution much more likely, easier to consolidate and less costly.''

Petty politics in occupied north do not affect us, says Cyprus FM

Larnaca, Oct 21 (CNA) -- All important decisions regarding the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus are taken in Ankara and therefore any petty politics tossing about, do not affect the course of our matters, Foreign Minister George Iacovou has stated, commenting on the resignation of so-called premier Mehmet Ali Talat.

Responding to questions on the presence of US experts in the occupied areas in order to check security measures at the illegal airport ''Ercan'', at the Turkish-occupied Tymbou village, Iacovou said that the Greek Cypriot side considers this to be an unnecessary act, noting that ''the role of the US is not to check airports and especially airports that are illegal''.

This specific act is related to a certain policy followed by the US State Department aimed to relieve the Turkish Cypriot community from ''isolation'', ''an approach our side disagrees with since this has nothing to do with the creation of independent institutions but with the use of the institutions of the Cyprus Republic.''

Foreign Minister says Britain has no objective to Cypriot demands

Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- Britain understands fully the issues which Cyprus has raised and which need to be sorted out before the European Union decides on whether to begin accession negotiations with Turkey, Cyprus Foreign Minister George Iacovou said here today.

Speaking after a meeting with British Minister of State for Europe Denis MacShane, Iacovou also said that they discussed various issues, including the situation in the Middle East, Iraq and Iran, but mainly European concerns.

In his remarks, MacShane said Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos and Iacovou have ''a very constructive relationship'' with all EU partners, something he said would help the Union develop a new future in the Eastern Mediterranean in which everybody will be a winner.

Cyprus President: we are working to prevent illegal flights

Nicosia, Oct 21 (CNA) -- Cyprus will work against any move that might be a blow to the Republic's sovereignty and legal status, President Tassos Papadopoulos said here today, commenting on a visit by US experts to inspect an illegal airport in the Turkish-occupied northern part of Cyprus.

''We had been informed about the visit and we also know of Washington's persistent efforts to open up the illegal airports in occupied Cyprus'' to the world, he added.
