President Clerides - Ambassador of San Marino - Credentials

Nicosia, Feb 8 (CNA) - The new Ambassador of San Marino to Cyprus, Maria Alessandra Albertini, presented her credentials today to President of the Republic Glafcos Clerides, noting that her country pays great attention to Cyprus' European Union accession course and fully supports Cyprus' legitimate demands for recognition of its sovereignty.

In his reply, President Clerides referred to the Cyprus problem and Turkish intransigence regarding a solution, pointing out that it creates new impasses and endangers the continuation of the negotiations aiming at finding a solution to the problem.

President Clerides - Ambassador of Nicaragua - Credentials

Nicosia, Feb 8 (CNA) - Cyprus will not accept any solution which is tantamount to legalising the tragic results of the Turkish invasion of 1974 and the subsequent occupation of 37% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus, President Glafcos Clerides said today, adding that Cyprus' accession to the European Union (EU) as well as Turkey's aspirations to become a member of the EU open a "unique window of opportunity to put an end to the division of the island".

Receiving the credentials of Nicaragua's new Ambassador to Cyprus Alejandro Mejia Feretti, President Clerides stressed that "our side has the political will to negotiate a just and viable settlement of the Cyprus problem which will be based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation according to UN resolutions, the norms of international law, the respect of human rights and the acquis communautaire of the EU".
