Kyprianou accused of nepotism

ACCUSATIONS of nepotism by the election camps of presidential candidates George Iacovou and Glafkos Clerides continued to feature high on the list of stories of yesterday's Greek newspapers. The Joint Defence Dogma was also a point of disagreement.

Phileleftheros says that presidential candidates who do not expect to be in the second round of next month's presidential election have already launched contacts to help them determine what their choice of candidate would be on February 15.

The paper says that United Democrats leader George Vassiliou and Edek's leader Vassos Lyssarides had lunch on Monday. They both refused to make any comments as to the content of their discussion.

On another issue the paper says that there is a shortage of olive oil because of this year's low olive production and an ongoing strike at Sekep.

Alithia focuses its attention on charges of nepotism against Diko president Spyros Kyprianou.

The paper quotes unidentified sources as saying that Kyprianou would call the former Justice Minister Alecos Evangelou at 6.30 in the morning sometimes to ask him to intervene personally to secure job positions for Diko members.

According to the paper Kyprianou would also differentiate between Diko members close to his MP Tassos Papadopoulos and would ask Evangelou not to promote them.

Simerini reports that Turkey seems to be backtracking on its recent threats regarding the Paphos air base.

The paper says that the Turkish Defence Minister said that the Paphos base does not pose a particularly grave threat to security.

On another issue the paper says that ten Strovolos Diko members have expressed their disagreement with the party's decision to back Iacovou for president.

Agon says that Diko MP Katerina Pantelidou, known for her opposition to the decision to back Iacovou, will not be banned from the party.

The paper says that Diko officials know that if she is banned Diko and Akel would no longer have a House majority.

Machi reports that former Defence Minister and Diko member Costas Eliades had a meeting with Greek Defence Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos recently conveying a message from Spyros Kyprianou that the Greek minister needs to make a statement backing a written formalisation of the context of the Joint Defence Dogma.

Haravghi in its main story presents George Iacovou's views on the problem of drugs during a speech he made.

The paper also highlights statements for Akel leader Demetris Christofias that all presidential candidates should state their positions on issues other than defence and the national issue as well.
