Russia to honour agreement

ASSURANCES by the Finance Minister Christodoulos Christodoulou following his visit to Russia that the S-300 missiles will be delivered on time and election gatherings of the presidential candidates over the weekend are the main topics on the front pages of Monday's Greek papers.

Phileleftheros says that the minister said that Russia will honour its obligation to deliver the missiles on time and in safety.

The minister said that the government has decided to conduct a feasibility study for Cypriot investments in Russia.

On another issue the paper says that EU ministers were to discuss yesterday Turkey's denial to participate in the European Conference in March. Turkey is refusing to attend because of the EU's denial to offer it a prospective member status.

Simerini says that regarding the S-300 missiles Russia is ready to honour the agreement.

The paper says that Russia will not be deterred in its implementation of the agreement despite threats from the Turkish military that it will take military action to destroy the missiles.

Alithia highlights quotes from a book by former government spokesman Miltiades Christodoulou in which he says that late Archbishop Makarios considered Glafkos Clerides the ideal person to succeed him.

The paper says that Makarios had discussed the issue of his successor only a few days before his death.

On another issue the paper says that defence issues are the main issues of confrontation between rival presidential candidates.

Agon also highlights the finance minister's comments on the Russian missiles and goes on to also report on the financial relations between Russia and Cyprus.

The paper says that it is expected that the number of Russian tourists visiting Cyprus will increase in 1998.

Haravghi's main story is a report on George Iacovou's election visit to Paphos during the weekend.

The paper says that the attendance of Iacovou's speeches in Paphos is an indication that the Akel and Diko-backed candidate will be the winner of next month's presidential elections.

To Tharros says that Diko leader Spyros Kyprianou has charged that some Akel officials are `pressuring' Diko members with regard to the presidential elections.

The paper says that Kyprianou confronted Akel leader Demetris Christofias with these reports.

Christofias, according to the paper, answered that some `unwilling' Diko members have hurt Iacovou's election chances.
