  • [01] LIGHT MUSIC SONG FESTIVAL STARTED IN ALBANIA

    TIRANE, DEC 18 (ATA) - By Flora Nikolla: The 36th Song Festival qualified as the most important artistic event of the year, started in the Palace of Congresses in Tirane on December 18,1997.

    "This Festival has not simply the value of a contest which will single out the winning song, but for four successive evenings, like in a serial film, new light music songs composed during the year will be presented," Zhani Ciko, artistic leader of the festival told ATA.

    Presenters of the festival are its scenario writer, Ardian Krasta and the Albanian Misses, Monika Zguro, Hygerta Sako and Vilma Papajani. The first 18 songs were presented on Thursday.

    Music specialists said that "the new songs will give a new physiognomy to our light music based on the motives of folk music and the elaborated light music." ake/kei/xh/

    [02] TWO ALBANIAN POLICEMEN KILLED AND THREE WOUNDED IN AN AMBUSH

    TIRANE,19 (ATA) - Two policemen lost their lives and three others were injured on Thursday evening when armed and masked people opened fire against a police van of the Commissariat of Ballsh, Southern Albania, Interior Ministry sources say.

    The event took place in Ura e Shaban Agori in Ballsh district, when the riot police group which was going to assist some people who had been pray of a number of armed and masked men, was attacked by the same group.

    As a result of this criminal act, two policemen Astrit Bregasi, driver of the van, and Velo Doda were killed and other members of the group, Nebi Hyskaj, Bujar Hamiti and Albert Rama were gravely wounded.

    The police forces of Ballsh commissariat and forces of Interior Ministry that went to the spot immediately could seize one of the culprits. ssh/kei/xh

    TIRANA, DEC. 19 (ATA) - The Albanian dailies cover on Friday the one-day- visit of the Italian Foreign Minister, Lamberto Dini in Albania, as well as the report for the arrival near the Albanian coasts of three ships, suspected of having smuggling goods. The papers, in the heading of culture, pay a special attention to the 36th Song Festival, which started Thursday in Tirana.

    With regard to the visit of Dini, Zeri i Popullit writes "Italy, door to Europe," as well as "220 million dollars aid and cooperation projects." The paper highlights the meetings of President Meidani and Premier Fino with Dini. Rilindja Demokratike reports regarding the meeting of Dini with DP head Sali Berisha: "In Albania, rough climate of confrontation," and cites Dini as saying "Italy, the door of Albania to Europe." Republika paper carries the editorial "Europe, far and near," quoting Dini: "Albania considers Italy the way to Europe." This statement is considered by the papers as equivalent with the idea of Nano for "protection."

    Among the titles for the visit of Dini, at Koha Jone we mention "Dini to Nano: Resist to pressures," "Berisha speaks, Dini listens," "Italy, the door of Albania to Europe." Albania carries the editorial "Agreements for the agreements." Shekulli quotes Dini: "Italy gate to Europe," and writes "The Ministers sign bilateral agreements." Rilindja covers the meeting of President Meidani with Italian Minister Dini, under the title "The Constitution should include all the parties." Dita writes that the political aim of Dini was to turn DP to Parliament, and cites the later regarding the meeting with Berisha "The meeting was fruitful." Under the headline "Dini meets Meidani, Nano, Milo and Berisha in Tirana," the paper reports "Liras for 10 000 job positions - Italy gives aid worth 317 milliards."

    With regard to the ships which came near the Albanian southern coast, under the headline "'The goods' are in Lukove and Ksamil, the southern policy on complete alert," Shekulli writes "Smuggling insists, three ships on the seashore." Gazeta Shqiptare carries the article "Ghost ship on the seaside."

    Republika reports on the first night of the Song Festival and publishes the titles of the songs to be sang in the second night. Koha Jone writes "The first night, 20 minutes delay." Albania reports "Fest '97 - The song turned to homage." Shekulli carries two brief interviews with two of the presenter of the Festival Vilma Papajani and Hygerta Sako. Gazeta Shqiptare reports "Fest '97, 'the adventure' starts an hour late." /kei/mt/k

    [04] A BUS IN KUKES FALLS CAUSING 7 DEAD AND 30 INJURED

    KUKES, DEC 19 (ATA) - By R Hoxha: About 7 people are thought to be killed on Friday at about 9 a.m. when the Kukes-Shkoder service bus with about 59 passengers got out of the road and fell down, 35 km from Kukes, Northern Albania.

    So far over 20 injured and two dead persons have been taken to the city hospital.

    "The number of the dead is expected to be higher," witnesses said.

    Police forces and medical service vehicles reached the place immediately. According to reports from the city hospital, the driver of the bus of Kukes, Shaban Pashku, 45, was injured, whereas one of the dead passengers was his son, people said.

    Police have not yet declared the final result of the event. kei/xh/k

    [05] BOOK "DYRRAHU - HISTORIC, ARCHEOLOGICAL, CULTURAL ITINERARY" PUT ON SALE

    DURRES, DEC. 19 (ATA) - By S. Gjordeni: The book "Durres - The historic, archeological and cultural itinerary," was put on sale on Friday, published by the Association Pal Engjelli in Durres.

    The book aims at informing the readers with the history of the town and the main archeological monuments, by pointing out their cultural and historic values.

    The book, written by the new scholars Alban Ulqini and Arian Leka, has been published in three languages: Albanian, French and Italian, which will also serve to foreign tourists. /kei/mt/k

    [06] BODY OF PERSON, KILLED IN JAIL OF SALONIKA, REPATRIATED

    KORCE, DEC. 19 (ATA) - By B. Fejzullaj: The body of the 25-year old person, Besnik Bregasi, killed by the Greek guards of the jail in Salonika, has been repatriated on Thursday in Albania, sources close to the Korce police directorate reported.

    The body was handed over to the authorities of the Korce police in the customs-house of Kapshtice and was sent to the morgue of the hospital, and the family relatives are expected to come and take it.

    Besnik Bregasi was killed in the jail of Diavata in Salonika during a revolt held by a group of Albanian prisoners on Tuesday evening.

    The victim, together with another Albanian prisoner, at the moment of entering the cell, attacked both guards and tried to take the keys, aiming to escape from the jail. One of the guards shot and seriously hurt Besnik, who died later in the hospital.

    According to the Greek press, there are reported other injured.

    Actually, some 2000 Albanian citizens serve the punishment in the Greek prisons. /a.ke/kei/mt/k

    [07] KUKES: FOUR DEAD AND SIXTEEN INJURED

    KUKES, DEC 19 (ATA) - By R Hoxha: Four dead and 16 injured, six of whom in a grave situation, is so far the result of the road accident which took place Friday morning on the Kukes-Shkoder road, sources of district police commissariat told ATA.

    Today in the morning, the bus with about 30 passengers of the Kukes- Shkoder bus line, went off the road and after some turns in the air fell about 100 meters in the abyss.

    The cause for the accident were the smog and the ice on the road. ssh/kei/xh/k

    [08] GJADRI PLANES START FLIGHTS

    LEZHE, DEC.19 (ATA)- By Z. Pergega, Ten military planes of the Gjadri air base (near Lezhe), northwest of Albania, took off today, after a ten- month interruption due to the March unrest.

    The spectacular flights were carried out in the Lezhe air space.

    The Defence Air Forces Command, local government and catholic mission of Blinisht have contributed to the re-operation of this base.

    During the March turmoil two flights of this base were damaged and a teenager died after being launched with the catapult of one of the planes. s.sh/pas/lm
