  • [01] Last session of the Council for the Defense of the Country this year

    Under the chairmanship of President Emil Constantinescu the last meeting this year took place of the Council for the Defense of the Country. The session took place at the Cotroceni Palace. The Council was informed with regard to the follow-ups of the flood situation of the country and the draught of last summer which have repercussions in the water courses flow of Romania also taking into account the fact that this winter, according to specialists, will not have much snow. Measures to limit the consequences were discussed.

    [02] The National College for the Research of the archives of former Securitate - Communist Political Secret Police - releases lists of names of collaborators

    The National College for the Research of the archives of former Securitate has released lists of names of former collaborators of Securitate. They are all candidates of various political parties for the general elections this following Sunday. A first category of persons includes collaborators of Political Secret Police that themselves unfolded an activity specific to former secret political police. A second category is represented by people that collaborated with former Securitate and whose activity cannot be argumented by documents which had been filed in the dossiers of former Securitate. A third category is made up of persons that signed a written pledge with former Securitate and then refused to collaborate or gave insignificant details that cannot be taken seriously into consideration. A fourth category includes those candidates that worked directly within the structures of former Securitate. Of these four categories the College considers that the third category of persons will not have names disclosed in MONITORUL OFICIAL.

    [03] Interview of President Emil Constantinescu given Agence France Presse

    President Emil Constantinescu gave an interview to Agence France Presse in which he said that the last four years meant a deep and irreversible mutation for Romania particularly by the building of the democratic institutions, the consolidation of the private property as well as the creation of a model of inter-ethnic relations which are effectively implemented by the association to ruling of the Magyar ethnic minority. As part of the same interview to Agence France Presse Mr. Constantinescu also mentions the start of adherence negociations to the European Union and the creation of partnership with France, Great Britain and the United States.

    Toward the end of the interview the President of Romania said he would not revert to political activity as this means compromises which he detests. He intends to write several books about the experience lived on a continent which lives deep going transformations.

    [04] Programme of development of the villages of Romania which is financed by the European Union

    The European Union approved a programme which is destined to rural development of Romania worth 150 million euros according to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI which has quoted a report sent in by its special correspondent to Brussels. The funds will be used for the development of the market of agricultural markets, fish breeding as well as for a programme of training specialists in these domains of activity. At the same time the programme is financing projects for the protection of the environment, the agricultural sector and the administration of water resources.

    [05] Belgrade - talks regarding the economic cooperation between Romania and Yugoslavia

    The first Romanian economic mission to Yugoslavia after the lifting of the embargo against Yugoslavia continued talks in Belgrade on Wednesday. The hosts are Yugoslav businessmen. According to the correspondent of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI during the two days of talks, 50 Romanian companies as well as 92 Yugoslav companies have tried to identify domains of cooperation, the Yugoslav side being interested to purchase and make use of equipment for the development of infrastructure and the rebuilding of the power sector as well as in the development of joint projects which might bring about an increase of the level of commercial exchanges between Belgrade and Bucharest.

    The city of Bucharest is hosting the International Conference of the Balkan Environment Association - B E N A - on the theme TRANSFRONTIER POLLUTION.

    The President of Romania is receiving at the Cotroceni Palace the rugby teams of Romania and New Zealand. The Oakleaves ( Romanian squad ) play the All Blacks in Bucharest on Saturday.

    At the initiative of the Romanian Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu the reburial takes place today of the remains of general Nicolae Radescu, former Prime Minister of Romania in the interval 1944 - 1945. The casket has been brought back home from the USA - New York - by a TAROM flight. The reburial ceremony takes place at the Christian Orthodox Bellu Cemetery of Bucharest.

    Meeting of the National Security Council under the coordination of Mihai Razvan Ungureanu, secretary of state with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

    Istanbul, Turkey, hosts the General Assembly of the Association of Balkan Chambers of Commerce; the Romanian delegation is led by Florin Burada who is the vicepresident of the Chamber of Commerce of Romania and of Bucharest.

    The Gaudeamus Book Fair of the city of Bucharest with books launching today: The History of the Romanian Radio Broadcasting Corporation, volume two, part three by Eugen Denize, the book and the cassette THE COMPLETE PERSONALITY OF ROMANIAN CULTURE - MIHAI EMINESCU by Constantin Noica ( philosopher and man of culture ) as well as the CD MESTERUL MANOLE edited by Foundation Sigismund Toduta. The CORYNTH Publishing House releases the volume MIRCEA CEL BATRAN while the POLIROM Publishing House launches the volume ABOUT STATUES AND TOMBS.

    Dance show with the Irish group MAGIC OF THE DANCE organized by SPHYNX EXPERIENCE at Sala Polivalenta.
