  • [01] Finance Minister Remes does not agree with paying back depositaries that lost money at the National Investment Fund - FNI

    Mr. Remes is of the opinion that if the people that lost all their money invested at the National Investment Fund that went bankrupt following large scale frauds are reimbursed by the state, this would mean losses for the entire population, as the money is taken out of the state budget, which is thus diminished. One of the solutions agreed by the Finance Minister of Romania is partial paying back and only in some special cases and, taking into account the pledges and legislation of the Romanian state regarding the use of public money.

    [02] Vicepresident of the Democratic Party, PD, Alexandru Sassu, is of the opinion that the parties responsible of the fraud and bankruptcy of the National Investment Fund are the National Bank of Romania and the Finance Ministry of Romania

    The Democratic Party leader made that statement at the press conference of his party that took place here in Bucharest. Mr. Sassu is the chairman of the Parliamentary Committee that investigated the fraud and bankruptcy of FNI. He added at the same press conference that the attempts of Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu and of Finance Minister Decebal Traian Remes to take the National Bank of Romania and the Finance Ministry out of the case demonstrate the fragility of the banking system of Romania and puts under the question mark the responsibility of the National Bank in the recent past and at present. Mr. Sassu added that the people of this country have no longer any trust in the Romanian banks. Also during Thursday's press conference Mr. Sassu gave the media present the list of the institutions and persons that were able to withdraw their money with interest from the Fund last year and this year. Figures add up to hundreds of billions. The Fund losses equal one thousand billion.

    [03] Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu visited the Bucharest International Fair

    Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu visited the Bucharest International Fair and attended the opening of the National Investment Forum organized by the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The Prime Minister told those present at the opening session of the Forum that Romanian exports increased this year sensibly as against last year and he expected investments in Romania to increase likewise. He added that the Cabinet was preparing a document sanctioning the rights of the employers to be passed in next week's special Cabinet session.

    [04] A new Romanian Bank Note worth 500,000 lei

    Starting 23 October a new banknote worth 500,000 lei will start being circulated. Alongside this new large bill, the largest until now, a new metal coin worth 1000 lei will be put into circulation. According to a communique released by the National Bank of Romania, the note depicts the portrait of Aurel Vlaicu, one of the pioneers of the Romanian aviation, the bill having plastic support and added elements to make forgery close to impossible. The coin worth 1000 lei depicts the portrait of prince Constantin Brancoveanu who ruled at the beginning of the XVIII - th century. The bill is yellowish and the coin silvery.

    [05] 150 years of Romanian - French parliamentary relations

    The Romanian delegation that participated in the events in Paris occasioned by 150 years of French - Romanian parliamentary relations came back home. The delegation was headed by the Chairman of the Chamber of Deputies, Ion Diaconescu, who told one of the reporters of RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI present at the arrival that France, by its international organizations reprezentatives, will support Romania in her efforts of Euro Atlantic integration. Mr. Diaconescu also stressed the exceptional relations between France and Romania and the warmth with which the delegation was received by the French hosts. The delegation also included Adrian Nastase, Head of the group of friendship Romania -France of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, Gabriel Tepelea and the secretary of the Standing Committee, Corneliu Ciontu.

    [06] A delegation of the Reforming Liberal Democratic Party of the European Parliament is now on a visit to Romania

    The delegation is led by the leader of this parliamentary group Pat Cox. At a press conference the European parliamentarian reaffirmed the support of his group for European Union expansion as well as for Romania's integration. He added that the elections in Romania this fall are very important as they will help find the appropriate tempo for Romania's adaptation to the requests of intregration in European structures.

    [07] Military accord between Romania and the Republic of Moldova

    The Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Romanian Army, division general Mircea Chelaru signed on Thursday, together with his opposite number of Chisinau, brigade general Mircea Coropceanu, an accord of collaboration which provides for cooperation in staff training and joint exercises. General Chelaru was quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI saying that this accord of collaboration was very important as it was the beginning of a strategic partnership of the two armies. The partnership means the working out of a new concept of joint space of security under the Initiative and the Pact of Stability for South Eastern Europe for finding the solutions of peacefully solving the sensitive areas problems in this part of Europe.

    [08] Humanitarian aid for the Republic of Moldova from Romania

    The first part of the humanitarian aid from Romania for the victims of the natural catastrophes in the Republic of Moldova arrived at Chisinau. The humanitarian aid is worth 5.2 million USD and it is made up of food, medicines and fuel. On this occasion the Ambassador of Romania to the Republic of Moldova, Emil Ciobu, made a statement.

    [09] Sibiu is hosting the festival ROMFEST 2000

    Romanians living in various parts of the world are meeting at the Military Circle of the town of Sibiu as part of the festival ROMFEST 2000. The volume which includes 60 studies and papers illustrating the situation of Romanians living everywhere in the world was also presented. The volume is entitled THE LIFE AND AIM OF THE ROMANIANS IN THE YEAR 2000. The key note speaker of the Sibiu meeting was the representative of Romanians living in in the United States, Gheorghe Calciu, who is considered one of the symbols of the anticommunist resistance of this country. Father Calciu is honorary president of the festival.

    [10] The Romanian Press League was set up

    EUROPRESS is the name of the newly set up press league and among the founding members there are Emil Hurezeanu of DEUTSCHE WELLE, Cristian Mititelu of the BBC, Ilie Serbanescu of ZIARUL FINANCIAR, Bogdan Ficeac of ROMANIA LIBERA as well as many others. The aim of this non profit organization is to contribute to the promotion of values which are at the basis of Western democracies and to prime off social and political climate by focusing on the real problems of the country.

    [11] Ion Tiriac resigned from the position of President of the Romanian Olympic Committee

    Former lawn tennis star and promoter, businessman Ion Tiriac, handed in his resignation from the position of President of the Romanian Olympic Committee as announced on 28 September in Sydney after Andreea Raducan case. The reason given in the resignation paper was that Ion Tiriac felt he could not exclude gymnast Andreea Raducan from the Olympic team for life following the famous ASPIRIN CASE of the gymnast. Andreea was found positive in rather questionable circumstances after having taken NUROFEN against cold. NUROFEN contains pseudoephedryne which is on the list of banned substances of the INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE and which is not banned by the International Gymnastics Federation as the substance can in no cirscumstance improve performance of gymnasts and as a rule it does slow down reflexes thus hindering performance gymnasts to reach peak record level. Ion Tiriac will remain member of the staff of the Romanian Olympic Committee.

    During the same session the ROC excluded for life from the Olympic team of Romania weight lifters Traian Ciharean and Adrian Mateas who were found positive at the Olympic Games of Sydney. The Executive Committee of the Romanian Olympic Committee decided against the exclusion of Andreea Raducan from the Olympic team of Romania.

    Special Cabinet session today.

    The Romanian defense minister Sorin Frunzaverde is attending in Sofia, Bulgaria, the meeting of the defense ministers of the countries candidating to NATO integration, in the presence of NATO Secretary General, George Robertson.

    European Institute of Romania is organizing the second session of debates under the motto ROMANIA'S ADHERENCE TO THE EUROPEAN UNION: ALTERNATIVES OF NEGOCIATIONS. The theme of the session is POLAND'S EXPERIENCE with special guest Jan Kulakowski, chief negociator of Poland for adherence to the European Union.

    The town of Tulcea is hosting the ceremony by which the Danube Delta receives the Diploma of Protected Region from the European Council. The Danube Delta has been a protected region ever since 1965.

    At Iasi, the relics of Saint George and of Saint Parascheva ( Parascheni ) are taken out of the Metropolitan Church as part of the yearly procession with the Patriarch of Constatinople, His Sanctity Bartholomew, attending, alongside the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, His Beatitude Teoctist, the Metropolitan of Moldova and Bucovina and all the other high ranking men of the cloth of the Romanian Orthodox Church. Participating is a multitude of pilgrims of Romania, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Norway and Switzerland.

    World star soprano Mariana Nicolesco is giving a concert of sacred music at Iasi on the same occasion, the commemoration of Saint Parascheva ( Parascheni ).

    At Sibiu beginning of the traditional jazz festival, now at its 30-th edition, this year organized by the Foundation Pro Art Hermannstadt.

    At Sighetul Marmatiei the XVII - th edition of the International Poetry Festival.

    [13] Anniversaries and Commemorations

    1858 - Birth of Take Ionescu, Conservative politician who was Prime Minister or Cabinet Minister for a number of times. He was also one of the most respected journalists of his time in the country and a correspondent of TIMES of London. Take Ionescu passed away in 1922.

    1902 - Birth of Stefan Odobleja, Romanian Doctor of Medicine and the author of the work CONCEPT OF GENERALIZED CYBERNETICS, that was released ten years before the work CYBERNETICS of Norbert Wiener.
