[01] The visit to Bucharest of the Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew
I
His Sanctity, the Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew I, is making, a
brotherly visit to Romania at the invitation of His Beatitude, Patriarch
Teoctist. The programme of the visit includes meetings and talks with the
Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church, Teoctist, the granting to his
Sanctity, Bartholomew I, of the diploma HONORIS CAUSA of the ACADEMY OF
ROMANIA, reception by the President of Romania and His Sanctity's
participation in the festivities occasioned by the yearly pilgrimage to the
relic of Saint Parascheni ( Paraschiva ) in Iasi. The silver casket with
the relic is kept at the Metropolitan Church of the town of Iasi.
Today His Sanctity Bartholomew I and his host, His Beatitude Teoctist, the
Patriach of Romania, are visiting the town of Galati.
His Sanctity Bartholomew I has received the diploma HONORIS CAUSA of the
ACADEMY OF ROMANIA. The distinction which was awarded to the Patriarch of
Constantinople by the President of the Academy of Romania, Eugen Simion, is
a token of the recognition of the personality of the Patriarch of
Constantinople, Bartholomew I, in the domain of theology and also a token
of the role he plays in our world today. At the festivity present were,
alongside members of the Romanian Academy, His Beatitude Teoctist, the
Patriarch of Romanian Orthodox Church, Presidential Counselor Traian Negrei,
members of the Romanian Cabinet and of the Saint Synod of the Romanian
Orthodox Church.
Bartholomew I was received by the President of Romania, Emil Constantinescu
at the Cotroceni Palace. His Sanctity Bartholomew offered the President of
Romania an icon depicting SAINT MARY'S CROSS, the original of which is kept
ever since the second century A.D. at the Patriarchal Cathedral of
Constantinople. Several copies were made on the occasion of the new
millennium. Saying that he knew the President would not run for a new term
in office, the Patriarch of Constantinople has thanked Mr. Emil
Constantinescu as a friend of Romania for everything the President did for
his country and for the international community during his mandate. The
President has appreciated, in his turn, the activity of His Sanctity, as
Ecumenical Patriarch, saying it was of special importance, especially for
the Orthodox Christians of South Eastern Europe, where Orthodoxy is part of
our tradition and the most important part of national identity of the
peoples of the area.
[02] The activity of the Romanian Senate
The Senate postponed the debate of the report of the Special Commission for
Research of the Activity of the State Ownership Fund. The President of FPS -
State Ownership Fund - Fondul Proprietatii de Stat - told a press
conference that the conclusion of the Commission report are equivocal as
most of the cases analysed should be attributed to the former management of
the Fund.
[03] Committees of Education of the Romanian Senate and of the Chamber of
Deputies about the scandal of the forged graduation diplomas
The inquiries of rector Carol Stanciu of Iasi, Dolphi Drimmer, former
rector of the Ecological University as well as of Adrian Miroiu, secretary
of state at the Ministry of National Education were all devoted to find the
guilty party or parties involved in the scandal of the forged graduation
diplomas given to a number of foreign citizens. In the opinion of Senator
Florin Bogdan the Universities are not implied in the scandal and the
guilty party or parties are certain persons, not Universities or education
establishments.
[04] Official launching of the candidacy of Prime Minister Mugur Isarescu
for the office of President of Romania
The Prime Minister of Romania, Mugur Isarescu, is running as independent to
the office of President of Romania saying on the occasion of the official
launching of his candidacy that if he were elected he would be the
President of all Romanians, regardless of political line or policy. The
Prime Minister also said that he made this decision after long debating the
pros and cons and added he was determined the win the race. Mr. Isarescu
also said he was running as he knew he should be confident in the chance of
the Romanian people, he was confident in the oustanding intelligence and
qualities of our people and he believed that our people did have the right
to enjoy decent life.
[05] National Liberal Party is concerned about role played by women in the
Romanian society
National Liberal Party by MP Mona Musca launched the project WOMAN, A
SOCIAL CAPITAL OF ROMANIA considering that absenteeism that characterizes
the role played by women in the political life of this country is due to
the social statute and difficult economic conditions.
[06] Protest of PRM - Greater Romania Party
This party is protesting the decision of the Prosecutors' Office of the
Appeal Court of the town of Cluj to release from incarceration before the
trial Vince Joszef who, according to the communique released by the party "
had the intention to assassinate the mayor of the town of Cluj-Napoca,
Gheorghe Funar ". PRM asks the Ministry of Justice and the General
Prosecutors' Office to abide by legal provisions and proceed to trial with
Mr. Vince incarcerated in the arrest of the local Police.
[07] Princess Anne opened the British Council of Bucharest
Refurbished residence of the British Council of Bucharest was opened with
Princess Anne in attendance. Also present were the President of Romania,
Emil Constantinescu, and the Prime Minister of this country, Mugur
Isarescu. The festivity is part of the Festival BRITAIN IN ROMANIA.The
Princess has a rather heavy agenda here in Bucharest with various visits to
special children institutions and attendance of seminars organized by the
British Council and the Organization SALVATI COPIIII - Save the Children.
[08] European Union approves plan for the development of Romanian
agriculture and for development of the rural areas of this country
The plan was worked out by Romania and after talks with the secretary of
state of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Stefan Petre, the head of
the SAPARD UNIT, Karl Mortensen said the National Romanian Plan is to be
approved by the European Union General Department for Agriculture and
Budget Affairs.
[09] Union of Professional Journalists of Romania awarded ORDER OF
JOURNALISTS to several personalities of Romanian cultural life and media
The ORDER OF JOURNALISTS was awarded yesterday to 70 journalists and
personalities of the cultural life of Romania among whom Antonie Plamadeala,
Eugen Simion, Fanus Neagu and Octavian Paler. The Romanian Radio
Broadcasting Corporation has the following laurets:Adriana Calian Frateanu,
Rodica Madosa, Paul Grigoriu, Ioan Marinescu, Constantin Oprisiu and Dragos
Seuleanu. The ORDER OF JOURNALISTS was awarded for the entire activity to
all laureats.
