  • [01] The Senate Qualified the Government to Issue Ordinances During the Parliamentary Holiday

    On Tuesday, the Senate adopted with a large majority the bill qualifying the Government to issue ordinances during the parliamentary holiday. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, the Government may issue ordinances concerning industry, trade, finance, foreign affairs, defense, transport, agriculture and education. RADOR

    [02] Draft Laws Adopted by the Chamber of Deputies

    On Tuesday afternoon, the Chamber of Deputies adopted the draft law regarding the creation, organization and functioning of the National Council for Elderly People. This body is meant to implement the recommendations of the World Assembly of Elderly People, and to suggest ways and means for improving the living standard of these people, in cooperation with the specialized institutions. RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI specifies that the chairman of the Council is the labour and social assistance minister. RADOR

    [03] The Members of the College of the National Council for the Study of the Former Security Archives

    The Parliament's legal commissions approved ten of the eleven candidates for the National College for the Study of the Former Security Archives. Horia Radu Patapievici, whose candidature had been put forward by PNTCD, was rejected with 13 votes against him and 11 in favour, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. The ten candidates approved are: Claudiu Secasiu and Viorel Mircea Nicolescu, put forward by PNTCD; Andrei Plesu and Mircea Dinescu, put forward by PD; Florin Chiritescu, Aurel Pricu and Gheorghe Mihai, put forward by PDSR; Constantin Buchet, put forward by PRM; Gheorghe Onisor, put forward by PNL; Cserdes Ladislau, put forward by UDMR. According to the procedure, PNTCD will put forward another candidate, and following his approval by the legal commissions, all candidates will be validated by the two Chambers. RADOR

    [04] Ion Diaconescu Discussed with Representatives of the PNTCD Parliamentary Groups

    The PNTCD parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies met on Tuesday evening with the party president, Ion Diaconescu, who had previously held talks for two hours with the PNTCD parliamentary group in the Senate. One of the topics discussed was the expelling from the party of the former prime minister Radu Vasile. According to RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, Ion Diaconescu said all participants in the meetings agreed with that decision. RADOR

    [05] UFD President on a Visit to Teleorman County

    UFD president Varujan Vosganian payed a visit to Teleorman county on Tuesday, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs. On this occasion, 65 local PNL leaders decided to join the Democratic Forces Union, arguing that UFD was the only truely right wing party in Romanian politics. RADOR

    [06] First Meeting of the Trade Unions Confederations Representatives with the New Prime Minister

    On Tuesday, prime minister Mugur Isarescu met the leaders of the trade unions confederations BNS, Cartel Alfa, CSDR, CNSRL Fratia and Meridian, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI informs, quoting a Government press release. During the informal meeting the representatives of the trade unions confederations explained the prime minister the shortcomings in the social dialogue with the ministries and the Government as a whole. The prime minister promissed he would assure the transparency and efficiency of the social dialogue, according to the legal provisions. The next meeting is scheduled for January, when the two parts intend to discuss the problems in each field of activity. RADOR

    [07] Andrei Marga Explains the Delays in the Salary Payment

    Andrei Marga reviewed the activity of the Education Ministry in 1999, during a meeting with the press on Tuesday. Minister Marga, quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI, explained that the delays in the salary payment were due to the local treasuries. The Education Ministry and the Central Treasury made all possible efforts to overcome this situation, and in some counties the teachers and professors already received their salaries. RADOR

    [08] "Les Echos" about Romanian Economy

    The French newspaper "Les Echos" wrote about the economic situation in Romania. RADIO FRANCE INTERNATIONALE considers that the article stresses the slow rhythm of the economic reforms started ten years ago, and alleges Romania ranks last among the East European countries regarding both the economic growth and the living standard. As for foreign investments, they are ridiculously low for a country with over 20 million inhabitants. "Les Echos" notices though the abundance in the shops, the extremely great number of cars and the great number of cell phones. The French newspaper considers these are the sign "an embryo of middle class" appeared in Romanian society, able to consume even if its financial resources sometimes come from the "underground economy".
