[01] Presidential meetings
Romanian President Emil Constantinescu had talks on Monday with leaders of
the parties in parliament on political, economic and social issues. The
head of state welcomed the decision of parties in the governing coalition
to reshuffle and simplify the government structure. Among other things,
President Constantinescu considered as beneficial the existence of a
ministry of privatisation expected to step up reform in Romania. He added
that the Presidency will further facilitate such political debates
including opposition parties as well. Democratic Party (PD) leader Petre
Roman has announced that the new ministers will be appointed this month
according to constitutional provisions. In hisNturn, the leader of the
Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians (UDMR) Marko Bela has welcomed the

[02] PUNR simple motion
The Romanian National Unity opposition Party (PUNR) has presented a simple
motion to the parliament aimed at drawing attention to the situation of
Romanians in the counties of Harghita and Covasna where the ethnic
Hungarians form the majority. PUNR says the Democratic Union of Ethic
Hungarians (UDMR) is responsible for the situation down there. PUNR signals
out administrative discriminations of ethnic Hungarians against Romanians,
the attempt to marginalise Romanian clergy and teachers. Consequently, PUNR
proposes a special programme for the two counties and urges the state to
support the Romanian identity in the area. RRI-RADOR, November 11
[03] Czech support for Romania's NATO membership
The Czech Republic will support Romania in its efforts to join NATO", the
Czech Defence Minister Miroslav Vyborny said in Bucharest. Mr. Nyborny had
talks with his Romanian counterpart Victor Babiuc and was received by Prime
Minister Victor Ciorbea. The two sides reviewed recent changes in the
armies of the two countries as well as bilateral military relations and the

[04] Inflation rate in October
Infation rate in October was 6.5% higher than in previous months, National
Statistics Commission informed on Monday. Inflation rate was 130% higher
than in December 1996 and 169.2% higher than last October. RADOR, November

[05] 30 million ECU for Romania
The last 30 million ECU of loan aimed at improving the balance of spendings
will be transfered to Romania by the end of this year, the European
Commission announced after Romania's economic situation was examined
between November 3 - 7. Following discussions with Romanian authorities,
the European experts analysed future plans of G 24 summit in Brussels on
November 19. They admitted that, during the meeting, our country's partners
will have the opportunity to review information concerning recent progress

[06] Taiwanese businessmen in Bucharest
For four days, 41 Taiwanese companies will introduce themselves at the
World Trade Center in Bucharest. Taiwanese businessmen are interested in
getting information and establishing relations with their Romanian
counterparts. The head of the Taiwanese delegation, also executive director
of the Taiwanese Chamber of Foreign Trade, Mr. Chiah Sianli declared:
"Bucharest is the first stop of our delegation and other visits to Zagreb,
Moscow and Warsaw will follow. We would like to start business with our
Romanian partners and therefore, we would like to know more about the
business community in your country. I have to inform you that current trade
between Romania and Taiwan is rather low, and this is the reason of our
visit as we think the situaton should change. We wish Taiwanese businessmen
to invest in Romania". RADOR, November 11
