Help for AOL Users
The current America Online Web browser does not support many standard
features on the Web. This means that our site - and many others - won't look
their best when viewed through AOL.
Fortunately for PC users, there's a cure. Version 2.5 or higher of
the America Online software is designed to work with a program called a
"winsock." Winsocks allow your computer to speak an Internet language called
TCP/IP. Once you have AOL's Winsock running, you can use the most popular
Web browser - Netscape Navigator - with your AOL account.
Currently, only Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 users can take advantage
of AOL's winsock. (For Mac users, there is a temporary fix available.) Again,
you must be using version 2.5 or higher of AOL software. If you are on
America Online right now, check the version by selecting Help
from the toolbar and clicking on About America Online. If
the version number is less than 2.5, upgrade by clicking the Go
To menu and typing Upgrade.
Using Netscape With America Online
For Windows 3.1 Users
Follow the following steps:
- Before you do anything else, find a blank floppy disk and label it
Winsocks. Insert the floppy into your disk drive.
- Minimize America Online and open your File Manager
the Main program group on your desktop. Create a
new directory at the top of your C:\ drive and name it
download To do this, go to the File
menu and choose Create Directory. In the form that
appears, type c:\download and press OK.
- Return to America Online and go to the keyword Mozilla.
- Download the file labeled Download Winsock.dll into
your c:/windows directory. If America Online asks you if you would like
to overwrite an existing winsock.dll file, press Yes.
REMEMBER: By doing this
you will not be able to use any other Internet Connection. Therefore,
if you want to use another Internet Service Provider do not overwrite
previously installed winsock.dll files.
- Next, download the file Netscape 2.01 16-bit into the
folder c:\download. Exit America Online, return to
the File Manager, and open the directory
c:\download. Click twice on the file
N16E20.exe and follow the instructions on your screen
which are given to you by Netscape.
- When Netscape has installed, log out of America Online and close the
application. Shut down and restart your computer.
Using Netscape With America Online
For Windows 95 Users
Follow the following steps:
This method will allow you to use Netscape with America Online, but it will
disable any other Internet connection on your computer. If you want to use
another Internet Service Provider do not overwrite previously installed
winsock.dll files.
Before you do anything, create a folder somewhere on your hard drive and
name it Download. To create a new folder in Windows 95,
click your right mouse button inside the window where you want the folder
to be. Then choose New and Folder. To
give the folder a name, click on it's TEXT (not the folder icon), type in a
new name and press Enter.
- Minimize America Online and go to your desktop. Click on the
Start menu and choose Find and
File or Folders.
- Search for the file winsock.dll. When Windows 95 has
finished finding all winsock.dll versions, write down
their locations on a piece of scrap paper. For example,
c:\winsock\winsock.dll, c:\windows\winsock.dll. Keep the search screen
open for now.
- Find a blank floppy disk and label it "Winsocks." Insert the floppy
into your machine. Open My Computer and
A and recreate the folders and subfolders which you
recorded on the scrap paper. For example, for the directory
c:\winsock\winsock.dll, you would first create a folder called
winsock.
- Copy each winsock.dll file from the Search window into
its corresponding folder on your floppy disk. To do this, first open up
the folder on your floppy where you want to copy the file. Then click
and hold your mouse button down on the file you want to copy, and slowly
drag it over to the destination folder. When your mouse is hovering
over the destination folder, lift your finger.
- Return to the search window. Select each winsock.dll
and press delete. When you are prompted to confirm,
choose Yes. This will erase each Winsock. To run
another Internet application, you will have to reinstall the correct
winsock.dll from your A:\winsocks disk.
- Maximize America Online. Go to the keyword Mozilla
and download the file labeled winsock.dll into the
directory c:\windows.
- Next, download the file Netscape 2.01 16-bit into the
folder c:\download. Exit America Online and open the c:\download\
folder. Click twice on the file N16e20.exe and follow
the instructions on your screen. DO NOT download the
32-bit version. The AOL winsock is a 16-bit application and will not be
able to recognize a 32-bit program.
- After Netscape has been installed, go to the folder c:\download and
delete all of the installation files. Then log out of America Online,
go to your Start menu and choose Shut Down.
Turn your computer completely off and restart it.
