TURKISH PRESS REVIEWJULY 7, 1997Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning.[01] DENKTAS LEAVES FOR NEW YORK TALKSTurkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas left the eastern Mediterranean island for New York Saturday where he will be attending the United Nations-sponsored direct talks with his Greek Cypriot counterpart Glafcos Clerides.Speaking before his departure from Ercan Airport in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Denktas stressed that he was travelling to New York with "good faith" and appealed to Clerides to be in the same mood. A joint declaration issued late Friday night by the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot presidents stressed that there could be no return on Cyprus to the pre-1974 conditions. The statement also underlined that any settlement on Cyprus should be a bi-zonal and bi-communal one and should include Turkey's effective guarantees for the security and well being of the Turkish Cypriot people living on the island./Milliyet/Sabah [02] DEVLET BAHCELI ELECTED CHAIRMAN OF MHPDevlet Bahceli has been elected the new chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) during the second round of voting of the extraordinary Grand Congress. Bahceli and Tugrul Turkes, the son of the late founding leader Alparslan Turkes, were the only participants in the runoff. Bahceli won the race with 697 votes while Turkes collected 478./Milliyet/[03] TURKEY OUTLINES NATO AGENDATurkey, which will be represented by President Suleyman Demirel, Foreign Minister Ismail Cem and Defense Minister Ismet Sezgin at the NATO summit on July 8-9 in Madrid, will express its concerns about the enlargement process, will push for a collaborative struggle against terrorism, and a new slliance command structure.Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Ismail Cem will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook, French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine, among others./Milliyet/ [04] GOVERNMENT TO REDRESS KIRIKKALE DAMAGESExplosions which devastated a state-owned Kirikkale munitions factory and caused extensive damage in this Anatolian town was the top agenda item in a Cabinet meeting this weekend. Sukru Gurel announced that the government would compensate for all the damage suffered as a result of the explosions, the Anatolia news agency reported.A team of experts will arrive from the Netherlands to help determine the cause of the explosion and curtial any further damage from the unexploded munitions dispersed throughout the town. The Dutch team will be arriving in Turkey as part of an earlier agreement with an association of Aegean municipalities. [05] DIFFICULT WEATHER CONDITIONS HINDER FIRE FIGHTERSThe General Directorate of Forests stated that 19 forest fires were burning in various parts of the country, adding that the weather conditions made fire fighting difficult. Windy conditions prevented fire fighting aircraft from taking off, particularly in the southern most parts of the country.Officials reported that 100 acres of forest land was destroyed in the Ovacik and Saklikent districts of Mugla. Fires have also reportedly destroyed 248 hectares of forest in various parts of the Antalya district./Cumhuriyet/ [06] ECEVIT VISITS DIYARBAKIRDeputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit accompanied by eight ministers visited over the weekend the province of Diyarbakir. He said that the government would deal not only with the security problems in the region, but also with social and economic issues. /Sabah/[07] TURKEY SUFFERS GREAT LOSSES FROM UN EMBARGO AGAINST IRAQAs a result of the UN embargo imposed against Iraq for seven years, Turkey has suffered a $30-billion loss and exports from the eastern and southeastern provinces of the country have dropped from $780 million to $380 million. Mehmet Ozciloglu, Chairman of the Kilis Chamber of Industry, said that the embargo was a huge blow to the southeastern provinces of Turkey and urged UN officials to undertake moves to improve the situation. /Cumhuriyet/[08] FUEL OIL PRODUCTION OF 25.5 MILLION TONSIn 1996, Turkey produced 25.5 million tons of fuel oil. Fuel oil consumption for the same period amounted to 28 million tons. Last year 1.9 million tons of petroleum products were exported. Imports of similar products amounted to 5 million tons. /Cumhuriyet/[09] HUGE "BAG TRADE" REVENUESAccording to Ali Osman Ulusoy, Chairman of the Trabzon Chamber of Trade, Turkey's yearly revenues from "bag trade" amounted to $15 billion. Ulusoy noted that the profits ensured in this way would help close the gap between exports and imports. /Cumhuriyet/[10] WORLD'S BEST COTTON PRODUCED IN THE SOUTHEASTAccording to US specialists, cotton produced in the southeastern provinces of Turkey was the cotton with the highest quality in the world. Cotton producers from Japan, India and Mexico want to buy cotton seeds produced in southestern Anatolia. /Milliyet/[11] TURCO-GREEK UNCOOPERATIONA Greek newspaper reported that Turkey and Greek have agreed to support their applications for permanent membership in the UN Security Council. Turkey has agreed to support Greek candidacy for 1999-2000, and Greece will support Turkey's application for 2000-2001. /Sabah/[12] HUGE NUMBER OF MISSILES DEPLOYED IN TURKEY'S NEIGHBOUR COUNRIESGerman State Minister Benrd Schmidbauer said that Turkey's eastern and southeastern neighbours were engaged in an armament race. According to Schmidbauer, these countries also deploy missiles with chemical heads with the capacity to hit Turkey. /Sabah/[13] AWARD FOR TURKISH ARCHITECTTurkish Architect Ahmet Vefik Alp was presented with a silver medal at the Eight World Architecture Triennnial.
