    Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning.

    [01] CILLER: "NATO EXPANSION SHOULD SERVE TURKISH SECURITY INTERESTS"

    Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller said on Tuesday that, while the expansion of NATO is a dimension of European integration, Turkey wants this to be achieved with a view to having its security interests served in the best way. Before her departure for Brussels to attend a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, Ciller said that Turkey was working to ensure that "the perspectives on expansion of all European organizations ran parallel to, and were in harmony with, each other."/All papers/

    [02] BAKU-CEYHAN PIPELINE CALLED MOST SUITABLE ROUTE TO EXPORT AZERI OIL

    The deputy chairman of the Azerbaijan State Petroleum Company said the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline is the most suitable route for the export of that country's oil when economic, political and security concerns are considered, the Anatolia news agency reported. The chairman, Ilham Aliyev said that the distribution of Azeri petroleum to the world through the Mediterranean would be beneficial.

    [03] TRNC PROTESTS BORDER INCIDENT

    Monday's incident involving the tearing down of a Turkish flag at the cease-fire line dividing the Turkish and Greek sides on Cyprus triggered has protests in Ankara and Lefkosa. The official statement released by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Tuesday condemned the action as provocative and blamed the Greek Cypriot government for escalating tensions on the island.

    The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has warned the Greek Cypriot side to prepare to bear responsibility for the events it has been intentionally stirring up since August./All papers/

    [04] KUTAN FLIES TO YEMEN FOR GAS DEAL

    A delegation led by Energy and Natural Resources Minister Recai Kutan and Mustafa Murathan, general director of the state-run pipeline company BOTAS, will dapart today for the Arab Republic of Yemen to conclude a natural gas agreement. The Turkish delegation will return to Turkey on Friday./All papers/

    [05] TURKISH AND ISRAELI BUSINESSMEN MEET IN ISTANBUL

    The chairman of the Turkish-Israeli Business Council said on Tuesday that the Free Trade agreement signed in March between the two countries with the aim of increasing trade between Turkey and Israel, should come into force immediately after it is confirmed by the Israeli parliament.

    Rachella Weinstock, the Israeli team leader, said that the only Muslim country which had enjoyed a relationship over many years with Israel was Turkey. She added that the two countries could develop trade via cooperation.

    The meeting was participated in by 30 representatives from Israel and 97 firms from Turkey./All papers/

    [06] DEMIREL SAYS TURKEY TO ATTRACT FOREIGN CAPITAL

    President Suleyman Demirel said that for progress, Turkey needs to find a way to attract more foreign capital.

    Receiving the chairman and executive board members of the Foreign Capital Association on Tuesday, Demirel said foreign capital was an important factor for the development of Turkey and stressed that foreign capital should not be considered as "cash inflow" but as a means to acquire high technology.

    Pointing out that Turkey has a "door to three continents" Demirel said Turkey itself was a gigantic market and that it was impossible to be satisfied with the 1996 amount of foreign capital inflow./All papers/

    [07] TURCO-IRAN JOINT LAND TRANSPORTATION

    The Turkey-Iran Joint Land Transportation Commission is meeting in Ankara. The Turkish delegation at the talks is headed by Transportation Ministry deputy undersecretary responsible for land transportation, Yasar Tuncer, while the Iranian delegation is headed by Isa Ramazan Pour, the public relations director general of the Iranian Transportation Ministry. After the completion of talks in Ankara, the two countries are expected to sign a new transportation cooperation protocol./All papers/

    [08] PM ERBAKAN SENDS LETTERS TO MEMBER COUNTRIES OF THE D8

    State Minister Abdullah Gul, in Jakarta for the foreign ministers meeting of the Organization for Islamic Conference (OIC), delivered letters from Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan to member countries of the D8, the Anatolia news agency reported.

    Turkey is planning to establish an economic cooperation pact with eight Muslim countries, (D8) namely; Iran, Egypt, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nigeria and Turkey.

    While in Jakarta, Gul also participated at an international forum dealing with science, technology and human resources improvement and presented a statement from Prime Minister Erbakan.
