[02] PRESIDENT DEMIREL: ''TURKEY SHOULD DEVELOP FURTHER''
[03] LICE, October 25 (A.A) - President Suleyman Demirel said on Sunday
that Turkey should develop further, adding that ''we should act with
eagerness to develop each part of Turkey while entering to the year 2000.
This requires us to love each other more, it requires more solidarity.''
Demirel participated in the ceremony which was staged to lay the foundation
of factories and social facilities which Halis Toprak, a businessmen, will
construct in Lice county in southeastern Diyarbakir province. Addressing
the ceremony, Demirel recalled that he had visited Lice many times and
noted that ''I have visited here in painful and happy days. I have shared
your sorrows and joy. I am very happy to be with you in this joyful day.
Lice gets two schools, two factories, and a hospital today.'' Noting that
Halis Toprak promised to open these facilities on November 24, 2000,
Demirel said, ''I appreciate him and thank to him as he keeps his
promise.'' Demirel said Halis Toprak prepared a development project in Lice,
and added that ''hapiness of people is the target of the project.'' Demirel
said, ''we should act with eagerness to develop each part of Turkey while
entering to the year 2000. This requires more solidarity. Let us make
Turkey the 10th biggest and richest country among 188 countries within 15
years.''
[04] PREMIER ECEVIT LEAVES FOR IZMIT
[05] ANKARA, Oct 25 (A.A) - Premier Bulent Ecevit left for Izmit on Monday
morning. Ecevit will welcome Ehud Barak, Israeli Prime Minister who will
come to Turkey today. Ecevit and Barak will open the ''Israeli Village''
which was constructed by this country in Adapazari. Rahsan Ecevit, Ecevit's
wife and deputy leader of the Democratic Left Party (DSP); Metin
Bostancioglu, National Education Minister; and Koray Aydin, Public Works
and Settlement Minister, accompanied Ecevit. The prefabricated huts have
costed for 19 million U.S. dollars. The huts will shelter 3,000 quake
survivors.
[06] ISRAELI PM BARAK ARRIVES IN KOCAELI
[07] KOCAELI, Oct 25 (A.A) - Ehud Barak, Israeli Prime Minister, arrived in
Kocaeli province on Monday. Barak was welcomed by Premier Bulent Ecevit;
his wife Rahsan Ecevit; Koray Aydin, Public Works and Settlement Minister;
Metin Bostancioglu, National Education Minister; and many other local
officials. Barak and Premier Bulent Ecevit left for Adapazari at 10.30 a.m.
to participate in the handing over ceremony of the Israel�-built
prefabricated huts. Israel has constructed 312 prefabricated huts for the
quake survivors in Adapazari.
[08] PRIME MINISTER ECEVIT: ''PROFIT GAINED FROM INVESMENT WILL BE LASTING
AND WILL SATISFY PEOPLE''
[09] LICE, October 25 (A.A) - Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit Sunday pointed
out the importance of profit gained from investment and production, and
noted that ''the profit obtained from investment and production will be
lasting and will satisfy people even if it does not bring income quickly.''
Ecevit addressed a ceremony which was staged to lay the foundation of
facilities which Halis Toprak, a businessmen, will contruct in Lice county
of southeastern Diyarbakir province. Ecevit said, ''Toprak said an economy
which fails to add power to production and find employment to unemployed
will not bring lasting profits. His promises were not left in words, but
have been put into practice.'' Ecevit said, ''we were planning to make the
East and the Southeast to profit from the increasing dynamism of our
businessmen. Before all, this was important for our security. Of course, we
should increase security measures to prevent terrorism, but economic
facilities should come after security.'' Ecevit noted that they extended
great efforts in recent years to get the attention of enterpreneurs to the
region, and briefed about the promotion measures towards the region.
Pointing out that many businessmen came to the region for investment,
Ecevit recalled that the U.S. businessmen visited the region and promised
investments.
[10] TOURISM MINISTER MUMCU IN SOUTHERN ANTALYA PROVINCE
[11] ANTALYA, Oct 25 (A.A) - Erkan Mumcu, the Tourism Minister, said on
Monday that Turkey, Israel and Egypt launched joint initiatives for
promoting Eastern Mediterranean. Visiting Ertugrul Dokuzoglu, the Antalya
Governor; Mumcu noted that he had discussed the issue of joint promotion of
the Eastern Mediterranean with Israeli Tourism Minister during the World
Trade Organization meeting in Chili. They will discuss the issue in details
during his visit to Israel on November 21, 1999; Mumcu stated. Mumcu
stressed that they think of including Egypt in the joint promotion project
of Eastern Mediterranean. Antalya reached a bed capacity of nearly 400,000,
Mumcu emphasized. Mumcu pointed out that Turkey should benefit from this
capacity for 12 months.
[12] ECEVIT DUE TO BULGARIA
[13] ANKARA, October 25 (A.A) - Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit will leave for
Bulgaria on Tuesday to participate in a ceremony that will be staged to lay
the foundation of Ardino Dam which was constructed by Ceylan Holding. A
statement issued by Prime Ministry Press Center said Ecevit will leave for
Plovdiv, Bulgaria on Tuesday and will participate in international talks
there. Prime Minister Ecevit will proceed to Ardino following the talks and
attend the ceremony. Ecevit is expected to return the same day.
[14] FOREIGN MINISTER CEM DUE TO GERMANY
[15] ANKARA, Oct 25 (A.A) - Foreign Minister Ismail Cem will leave early on
Tuesday for Germany to pay a one-day working visit. The Foreign Ministry
said on Monday that Cem who will go to Germany on an invitation from German
Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, will attend the opening ceremony of the
Turkish Embassy building in Berlin. Cem will later meet with his German
counterpart Fischer within the framework of his visit. Foreign Minister
Ismail Cem is expected to watch the UEFA Champions' League group match
between Galatasaray and Germany's Hertha BSC Berlin. The Foreign Minister
will proceed to Greece the same day to attend the Black Sea Economic
Cooperation (BSEC) Foreign Ministers' Regular Meeting which will take place
in Salonica between October 27 and 28.
[16] ATHENS STAGE OF TURKISH-GREEK DIALOGUE STARTS
[17] ATHENS, Oct 25 (A.A) - Athens stage of Turkish-Greek dialogue started
on Monday. Mithat Balkan, the Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary, leads
the Turkish delegation while Anastasios Skopelitis, the Greek Foreign
Ministry Political Director, leads the Greek delegation. Ali Tuygan,
Turkey's Ambassador to Turkey, will also attend the meetings. The issues of
cultural and regional cooperation will be discussed at today's meetings.
The terrorism and related issues will be taken up at tomorrow's meeting.
Faruk Logoglu, the Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary, will lead the
Turkish delegation at tomorrow's meetings. Meanwhile, officials from the
Ministries of Interior, Justice, Culture, the General Staff, will also
participate in the meetings. They will join the meetings when the issues
concerning them will be discussed. The third round of Turkish-Greek
dialogues were staged between October 21 and 22, 1999.
[18] INAUGRATION OF ISRAELI-BUILT QUAKE VILLAGE - PREMIER ECEVIT AND HIS
ISRAELI COUNTERPART BARAK OPEN VILLAGE IN SAKARYA
[19] SAKARYA, Oct 25 (A.A) - Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and Israeli Prime
Minister Ehud Barak attended on Monday the inaugration of the ''Israeli
Prefabricated Village'' erected by Israel in Sakarya. Ecevit welcomed Barak
at the Cengiz Topel Military Airport, and later Ecevit and Barak proceeded
to Sakarya. Ecevit and Barak were welcomed by Health Minister Osman Durmus
and the high-level Turkish and Israeli officials when they arrived the
Israeli Quake Village. Prior to the ceremony, Ecevit and Barak opened the
village clinic. Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said
the warm relations between the Turkish and Jewish people were once again
proved. Noting that the Jews suffered a lot in the past, Ecevit said Jewish
people always received support from the Turkish people in their grievous
times. ''From the first moment after the earthquake, we found Israel in all
her power by our side. I want to express my gratitude to all of the Jewish
people for their support. The quake on August 17 was one of the most
serious and killing natural disasters in Turkey's history. However, I
believe we can heal our wounds with the solidarity of the Turkish people
and especially with the help of our friendly countries like Israel,''
Ecevit said. Ecevit stressed that Israel have supported Turkey and lended
her helping hand since August 17. Ecevit stated that Israel sent a 385-
person search-rescue and medical teams to Turkey after the quake. Ecevit
added that Israel also set up a field hospital in Adapazari, and this
hospital served 1,100 patients till early September. Ecevit recalled that a
total of 120 personnel and 40 voluntary doctors worked at the Israeli field
hospital, adding that Israel also sent a 400 thousand U.S. dollars medical
equipment. ''Israel immediately sent 500 prefabricated huts to Turkey. An
Israeli company sent humanitarian aid including 1,000 tons of fresh food
and clothings on vessel. Many other aid came from Israel. Israel set up a
320-house prefabricated village. The Turkish citizens who will live in
these houses will always mention Israel's great contribution and aid with
gratitude,'' Ecevit said. Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said that Israel
also set up a clinic and a school in the village. ''On behalf of our
citizens living here and the Turkish nation, I want to express my gratitude
to the Israeli government, all of our Jewish brothers and sisters in the
world and especially to Mr. Ehud Barak,'' he said. Ecevit said, ''our warm
relations with Israel in recent years have caused concern for some
countries. They considered these relations as a threat against their
security. But they have understood that the aim of the relations between
Turkey and Israel is not war, but it is peace. I believe the peace between
us will bring peace to the whole region.'' Following the ceremony, Ecevit
and Barak opened the monument bearing the Turkish and Israeli flags and the
sentence: ''The Israeli-Turkish Village has been donated to the residents
of Adapazari by the Israeli people and the Turkish government.'' Rahsan
Ecevit, the wife of Bulent Ecevit and the Deputy Leader of the Democratic
Left Party (DSP); Metin Bostancioglu, the Minister of National Education;
Osman Durmus, the Minister of Helath; Koray Aydin, the Minister of Public
Works and Housing; the Turkish and Israeli high-level officials and many
Turkish citizens attended the ceremony.
[20] INAUGURATION OF ISRAELI-BUILT VILLAGE
[21] ADAPAZARI, Oct 25 (A.A) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said on
Monday, ''Here in Adapazari's Israel-Turkey village a human chapter in the
relations betwen our two peoples and governments is sealed in friendship
and brotherhood.'' Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, and Barak attended the
inauguration of prefabricated housing project for those who were left
homeless by the massive earthquake which devastated northwestern Turkey on
August 17. Addressing the ceremony, Barak recalled that the quake disaster
had claimed thousands of lives, and left tens of thousands of others
homeless and destitute. Barak expressed condolences on behalf of all Jewish
people for those who lost their relitives, and beloved ones. Ehud Barak
recalled that Israeli government, like many other states, had decided to
assist Turkey to heal the wounds of the quake disaster. Barak added that
Israel had sent search and rescue teams soon after the quake, and set up a
field hospital capable of treating 1,100 patients, to this end. Barak added,
''Israeli citizens volunteered in a touching and spontaneous show of
solidarity to collect the donations and equipment.'' He noted that the
Israeli Defense Ministry had started a project to build a prefabricated
village in the disaster-stricken area. Underlining the historical
friendship ties between Turkish and Israeli people, Barak said, ''Today
with mixed feelings of satisfaction and tremendous sorrow we mark the
transfer of this village to the Turkish people and their government.''
Rifat Saban, Chairman of Jewish Community in Turkey; and David Harris,
Chairman of Jewish Community in the U.S., were also in attendance at the
ceremony. Saban said that the Israeli-built prefabricated village was the
best sign of the friendship between Turkey and Israel. In the Israeli-built
quake village, there are 320 prefabricated huts. There are also a school
having a capacity of 420 students, a medical center, a parking lot, and two
playgrounds. Israeli government has allocated 4.5 million U.S. dollars for
the prefabricated village project. Meanwhile, Israeli people, and Jewish
organizations in the U.S. have donated nearly 1 million U.S. dollars.
