The High-Performance Computer Systems Lab, Univ. of Cyprus, has a number of vacancies for Research Associates and Scientific Staff members in the area of GRID COMPUTING. In particular, we are looking for individuals that will undertake:

- The development and deployment of middleware for data management in a computational grid environment, building on frameworks such as the Globus technology (see http://www.globus.org/) and the European DataGrid (see http://www.edg.org/) and CrossGrid (see http://www.crossgrid.org/).

- The development, verification and deployment of software for managing very large computing clusters, scaling to many thousands of geographically distributed nodes;

- Systems and management of a large-scale data intensive grid facility;

- The development and deployment of quality assurance and verification procedures for grid software development and for grid operations.

We seek individuals with a strong research commitment, advanced exposure to programming systems, an interest to pursue post-graduate or post-doctoral studies in the University of Cyprus. Successful candidates will work as a team on the middleware design and reengineering as well as on the installation, deployment, operations and support of such Grids.

Positions will involve conducting research, development and integration, in the context of a major EU funded project named EGEE (Enabling Grids for E-science in Europe), co-ordinated by the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) and involving 70 institutes spread over more than 20 countries in Europe and beyond. The aim of EGEE is to integrate current national, regional and thematic Grid efforts, in order to create a seamless European Grid infrastructure for the Research community. The positions are initially for one (1) year, renewable up to two (2) years.

Qualitification Requirements

Education: University degree (Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D.) in computer science, computer engineering, computational science, or a related field.

Experience and Knowledge:

- Up to three years� experience in the information technology. Knowledge and practical experience in one or more of the following technologies:

* Grid Architectures & Technologies (OGSA, OGSI, Globus, EDG,etc.),

* Relational and/or Object Database Management Systems,

* Web Services development and management,

* Quality assurance and testing methods for component-based software applications

* Systems management using Unix, or Windows 2003/XP,

* Object-oriented programming, preferably in Java or C++,

* Security and Network management,

* Large-scale data management,

* Performance Evaluation and Benchmarking or Parallel and Distributed Systems.

* Practical experience with the software development lifecycle: methods, standards and tools, in particular for

* OO software, as a user of Linux, Sun Solaris, or other Unix operating systems and/or Windows, would be an advantage.

* Good communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with end-users are essential, as is the ability to work as part of a team.

- Good knowledge of Greek or French; basic knowledge of the other language or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly. Knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Annual salaries are in the range of CYP 9,000 - 16,000, depending on qualifications and prior experience [At present 1 CYP = 2 US dollars, approximately].
