POSTDOCTORAL POSITION IN BIOCHEMISTRY

Institute of Biology

NCSR "Demeokritos"

A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the protein crystallography laboratory of Dr. M. Vlassi at the National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos" (Institute of Biology) Athens, Greece. The research will involve expression and purification of the tumour suppressor protein BRCA1 and its mutants. The aim will be the structural and functional characterisation of BRCA1 missense mutations involved in inherited breast/ovarian cancer, with a combination of techniques including X-ray Crystallography, Circular Dichroism (CD), Differential Scanning Microcalorimetry (DSC-MicrocalTM), and Isothermal Microcalorimetry (ITC-MicrocalTM). The project will be in collaboration with Dr. D. Yannoukakos and Dr. G. Nounesis (IRRP, NCSR "Demokritos").

Candidates should have a PhD degree and must demonstrate significant experience in protein expression, purification and biochemical characterisation. Prior experience in protein crystallography, CD, DSC or ITC would be advantageous but not a pre-requisite.

The position carries a net salary of around 350.000 Drachmas per month with an initial appointment of 2 years and extension for 2 additional years after evaluation.

The Institute of Biology (one of the 8 Institutes of the National Centre for Scientific Research "Demokritos") is equipped for molecular biology, protein expression/purification and macromolecular crystallography. The x-ray crystallography lab is equipped with one, of the two existing in Greece, state-of-the-art X-ray system which comprises a rotating anode generator equipped with an MSC/Yale double mirror focusing system, an R-AXIS IV Imaging Plate Detector and an Oxford cryo system. The above system serves a network of 10 research laboratories related to structural biology, which are based in various universities and research Institutes of Greece. The Institute of Biology is also equipped with a JASCO J-715 Circular Dichroism (CD) spectrophotometer which is the only one existing in Greece.

Computing resources comprise various Silicon Graphics workstations.

We also have access to various synchrotron radiation sources (such as the DESY EMBL-Hambourg outstation synchrotron source in Germany) for high-resolution diffraction experiments.

Applicants should be younger than 37 years old.

Please send enquiries by 20-9-200, with a CV (in three copies) and the names and e-mail addresses of 2-3 referees to:
