AMS Physicist Position at Max-Planck Institute for BiogeochemistryJob Opportunities Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: "HR-Net News Distribution Manager" <[email protected]>Originally From: Gert Jaap van Klinken <[email protected]> The 14C AMS lab of the Max-Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena, Germany is seeking a physicist (m/f) for a position in 14C accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). Applicants should have a PhD in physics (or related science with physics experience), ideally in AMS methods development. Scientists with more general mass spectrometry or gas chromatography experience will also be considered. The MPI for Biogeochemistry is dedicated to research into climate-vegetation interactions (http://www.bgc-jena.mpg.de/). The AMS lab is at the first stage of development: facilities are being built up, and the AMS has just been ordered. This facility is long-term funded by the Max-Planck Society and has a generous budget for the setup of the lab and for research. The aim of the AMS group is to develop a highly automated, tightly controlled sample throughput system, aiming at high-precision 14C measurements of mainly atmospheric gas species and soil organic fractions. The successful applicant is expected to supervise part of the routine dating process (especially combustion, graphitisation, AMS measurements), and to carry out a research program focussing on interfacing gas chromatographic equipment with the gas sputter source of the AMS (GC-AMS). The position is available now, and will be on a 2-years contract basis at BAT IIa level; with proven ability of the applicant the position is likely to be made permanent at the end of the 2 years period.
