The Yale College Hellenic Society and the Department of Classics are cosponsoring a series of lectures entitled "Theatron of Hellas". This series is meant to examine a variety of aspects of the literary and historical legacy of the ancient Greek culture. The lectures will explore the ways in which visions of the past inform and interact with modern cultures, with special emphasis on the culture of Modern Greece.

Four distinguished scholars will present talks in this series:

October 14: Artemis Leontis (Ohio State University)

"The Greek Revival of the Delphic Festivals, 1927-1930."

October 21: Gonda van Steen (University of Arizona)

"Modern Productions of Classical Drama during the Greek Junta Years: the Present Under Ancient Cover."

October 28: Anna Stavrakopoulou (Harvard University)

"Returning from Greece: Journey and Homecoming in two Contemporary Greek Novels"

[The novels are: "Like A Novel" (1995) by Giannis Kiourtsakis and "The Philhellenes" (1992) by Mimika Kranaki]

November 4: Edmund Keeley (Princeton University)

"The Garden of Earthly Paradise: Henry Miller in Crete, 1939."


All lectures will take place on successive

Wednesday afternoons at 4:30 pm

Linsly-Chittenden Hall, 63 High Street, Room 101.
