U.S. STRATEGY IN THE AEGEAN

BRIGADIER GENERAL ROBERT T. OSTERTHALER DEPUTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY EUROPEAN AND NATO AFFAIRS DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

Following the U.S.-Russia summit in Helsinki, stability in Central Europe appears more secure than for many years. In Southern Europe, however, the turmoil in Albania shows that stability cannot be taken for granted. In this region long-standing disputes threaten important U.S. interests.

Brigadier General Osterthaler is a USAF command pilot. Since 1996 he has been Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and NATO Affairs at the Department of Defense. He has been instrumental in developing U.S. security policy toward NATO and the newly independent states of Central and Eastern Europe. His presentation will review U.S. strategic interests in the Aegean region and examine NATO's role in addressing regional problems.
