Ottawa, August 17: Demonstration at Canadian Parliament for CyprusPublic Events Directory - Previous Article - Next ArticleFrom: "HR-Net News Distribution Manager" <[email protected]>Originally From: [email protected] Greek-Canadians to Demonstrate at Canadian Parliament in Ottawa for Cyprus Press release from the Hellenic Congress of Quebec. 16 August 1995 Press Release Protest Against Turkish Attrocities The murder of Tassos Isaak, a 24 year old Greek Cypriot, through the brutal beating by a Turkish mob and the cold-blooded assassination of Solomos Spyrou by Turkish soldiers is the most recent example of the cruelty of the illegal occupation of Cyprus by Turkish government forces. These men were killed as a result of a planned protest against Turkey's continuing occupation of Cyprus. The demonstration originated in Berlin nine days ago spearheaded by 200 non-Greek motorcyclists from 14 European countries as well as from Canada and the United States who joined another 7,000 Greek-Cypriots in order to protest against Turkish aggression. Although this was a peaceful demonstration the Turkish authorities reacted with violence and bullets against the demonstrators and against UN peacekeepers. We strongly believe that Canada must take a firm position against violence and murder by denouncing the human rights violations of the Turkish government. Canadians of Greek-Cypriot origin are appalled by these atrocities and on Saturday 17 August at 1:00 p.m. 1996 will demonstrate on Parliament Hill, East Block. Buses will leave Montreal at 9:30 a.m. from Beaumont Plaza (between L'Acadie and Rockland).
