Subject: The Center for Hellenic Studies at Temple University From: ioannisk@grip.cis.upenn.edu (Ioannis Kakadiaris) ANNOUNCEMENT THE CENTER FOR HELLENIC STUDIES AT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY It is our pleasure to invite you to navigate through the home page of The Center of Hellenic Studies at Temple University with starting point at the URL: http://zoro.cis.temple.edu/~chs/. Establishment and general aims of the Center The Center for Hellenic Studies based at Temple University, was established in January 1995 to serve as a significant intellectual beacon promoting the values, culture, and contributions of Hellenism to world civilization. Through its educational, scholarly, and community outreach programs, the Center endeavors to make widely known the vast and meaningful formative influence of the Hellenic Civilization of all periods on contemporary values of humanism, liberal democracy, social dialogue, philanthropy, and artistic creativity. At the same time, it also seeks to highlight the specific contributions of the Hellenic diaspora community to all facets of American life. Not only do these represent the achievements of the Ambassadors of contemporary Hellenism but they are also a source of national and homeland pride. In the process the bonds between diaspora and homeland are reaffirmed. As an educational and cultural forum emphasizing democratic and humanistic ideals, the Temple Center for Hellenic Studies would advance the following objectives: - keep alive the great legacy that Hellenic Culture has bequethed to Western Civilization; - foster the study and understanding of the Hellenic Diaspora experience; - become a major contributor to the Core Curriculum programs of Temple and other universities in the mid-Atlantic region and champion all their Hellenic Studies efforts; - organize and sponsor Hellenic Cultural events, including lectures, conferences, exhibitions, and artistic performances for the benefit of its many constituencies in the tri-state area; and - provide an academic agency for a variety of community outreach programs aimed at, but not limited to, the continuing development and promotion of the large Hellenic-American community of the region.
