The speaker will start her presentation by reviewing the process of learning how to read and write in one's native language. As research has shown, an awareness of the sounds of a language precedes the ability to pair the sounds with letters. Teaching reading therefore, should proceed with building that phonological awareness through games and exercises. The aim of these activities would be to teach the children to : first perceive the sounds of a word, then identify them and finally try to pronounce the word. Children with limited phonological awareness will experience difficulties reading new words. The above methods for acquiring phonological awareness may apply to beginning reading in a second language such as Greek, which cosists of a both different sound system as well as a different alphabet. The emphasis of the workshop will be on techniques that can facilitate phonological awareness, basic phonological segmentation and reading between the ages of 4 and 6.
