PRESS RELEASE

We would like to announce the creation of: a non profit, non governmental organization dedicated to Administrative Reform and Public Management development with the distinctive title

Balkan and Eastern European Forum

The Forum aims to bring together practicioners of government and academics involved in:

  • policy making
  • management in government
  • public sector administration
  • citizen / government relationship

Thus, the organization expects to attract individuals from the Balkan and Eastern European countries, who work in various public agencies, local government, universities, research institutions, public enterprises, cross border joint ventures, business organizations, citizen groups and other non governmental organizations.

The Forum has already contacted a number of organizations and individuals, who have expressed great interest for participating in the workings of the Forum, including high ranking government officials from neighbouring countries to Georgia and Finland.

The Forum is aiming to hold its first conference sometime towards the end of September 1997, in Thessaloniki, contributing to the city's activities as Cultural Capital of Europe 1997.

It is hoped that by the end of the first conference a great step will have been made in bringing people together, facilitating the exchange and cross fertilization of ideas and eventually in contributing decisively toward public management development and policy making capacities of the Balkan and Eastern European emerging policy making institutions, who have a great deal in common.

The first conference hopes to deal with issues such as:

  • ethics in government
  • public personnel management
  • the institution of the Ombudsman
  • local government reform
