[01] BANK STRIKE CONTINUES FOR A 10TH DAY

Bank employees continue their strike for a 10th day demanding the withdrawal of a clause, already in Parliament for approval, concerning their social security. According to the General Confederation of Labor Unions, the clause brutally hurts the social security rights of bank employees.

The General Confederation of Labor Unions announced a 24-hour strike to take place Friday while negotiations will be launched next month between the Ministers of Interior and Finance and the public employees labor unions to draw up a new wage scale for public employees.

[02] THE ARCHBISHOP OF CYPRUS UNDERGOES SURGERY

Archbishop Chrisostomos of Cyprus was scheduled to undergo a 45-minute leg surgery at 10:30 am this morning.

The Nicosia Hospital Orthopedic Clinic Director stated that surgery was the proper treatment and in a different case it would have been very difficult for the Archbishop to ever walk again.

[03] YOUNG PEOPLE FROM BALKAN COUNTRIES VISIT THRACE

Forty young men and women from Balkan countries will be the guests of Greece-Turkey-Bulgaria Municipality Network Polis in Thrace until June 27 within the framework of the European program Youth against racism and xenophobia.

They will visit municipalities-members of the Polis Network in the three prefectures of Thrace, northeastern Greece, and they will participate in roundtable discussions on the phenomena of racism and xenophobia as well as the friendship of neighboring countries and the EU idea.

[04] ND EURO-DEPUTY DIMITRAKOPOULOS ON THE TURKISH VIOLATIONS

Greek Euro-deputy Giorgos Dimitrakopoulos (ruling party of New Democracy) addressed the European Parliament Security and Defense Subcommittee meeting and presented the issue of the Greek national airspace and Athens FIR violations committed by Turkish jets.

The subcommittee examined security issues concerning the European Union among them, the issue of national airspace violations of EU member states by third country aircraft (Finland-Russia case).

Mr. Dimitrakopoulos analyzed the issue of the violations and the problems they cause to air traffic and security in general and referred specifically to the problems caused by the Turkish jets violations over the Aegean suggesting the adoption of immediate measures to deal with the situation.

[05] OIL PRICES CLOSE TO 60 DOLLARS A BARREL

Oil price reached its highest level of all times being close to US$ 60 a barrel. OPEC has announced its intention to raise the production quota by 500,000 barrels for a sixth time in a year to increase reserves and stop the price hikes.

On June 15, the organization had agreed to increase production by 500,000 barrels a day starting on July 1 and authorized its chairman Sheikh Ahmad Fahd al-Sabah to launch talks on doubling oil production in case prices are kept above the US$ 50 mark in the next seven days.

The crude oil prices have increased by 7% since OPEC, which produces 40% of the world's oil, held a meeting in Vienna.
