Mr. Kaklamanis mentioned the essential contribution of the two peoples to European unification and the role they are called to play in the creation of the European Constitution and the founding of institutions that are decisive for the future of Europe. The President of the Parliament stressed that Cyprus' accession to the EU is a very positive factor of stability and development for the broader region, while he underlined that Cyprus' unity must be restored and the Turkish occupation forces must be withdrawn from the member of the European family. Mr. Kaklamanis agreed with the Italian President that the future of Europe is still connected to the restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East, pointing out that requirements for that are the creation of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, as well as consolidation of the security of the people of Israel. In ending, the President of the Parliament referred to the close cooperation between the Greek and Italian Parliaments, and the institution of the Euro-Mediterranean form as a permanent institution, to promote the strengthening of relations among Mediterranean countries and making the Mediterranean a center for cooperation, development and friendship for its people. The President of the Italian Republic thanked Mr. Kaklamanis for his warm hospitality, underlining that there are very broad fields of cooperation between the two countries, which must be developed.
