  • [01] GREECE IS READY FOR THE OLYMPICS

    Athens, 13 August 2002 (12:38 UTC+2)

Exactly two years before the official opening of the 2004 Olympic Games, all Greeks can rest assured that our country is able and ready to hold both technically flawless Olympics, and the Olympics on a human scale and mainly of an authenticity of places, scenery and ideals. The above was stressed by Minister of Culture Evaggelos Venizelos, drawing on the fact that in exactly two years from today (August 13) the 2004 Olympics will officially be opened.

He also added that two years before the Games, even those most wary and of bad faith accept that all the infrastructure works are underway, developing according to the schedule and being prepared on time, firstly for their Olympic use, and, secondly, as elements of a vast post-Olympic heritage for Greece.

Furthermore, he underlined that the wager of the Games is not the projects, but the active and generous participation of the Greek society, of all Greek women and all Greek men in this major celebration for sports, culture and peace.

There is of course no room for rest. We do not need any national vanity, but we always need a powerful dose of national confidence, which is offered two us by the 2004 Olympics, he stressed.

The glorious victories of our athletes in Munich along with the first Olympic sailing trials in Agios Cosmas, are two essential celebrations of our entry in the final stretch towards 2004. Professionally, methodically, collectively, and with dignity we all continue together the Government, the Organizing Committee, the citizens' society, the private and public sector, all political forces in this unique relay race, on which we are judged daily, and which we will finish as victors, he ended .

[02] THREE MORE N17 SUSPECTS TARGETED

    Athens, 13 August 2002 (13:50 UTC+2)

The authorities are searching for three allegedly high-ranking suspected November 17 members, who are related to the organization's first generation.

According to information, the officers of the counter terrorism service have begun investigations to locate and arrest these three suspects.

The police have photographs of the three individuals in their possession, but have not yet verified their identities, nor have they collected the evidence necessary to move to arrests. The faces of the three suspects had been saved on the computer discs found at the hideouts.

None of the authorities' witnesses, nor Savvas Xeros, has recognized the three individuals, and the authorities are still searching for someone to make a positive ID.

Based on what has been found by investigations so far, the authorities believe that these three may be the writers of the recent proclamation expressing grief for the innocent victims. The members of the first generation had pointed out that they would not harm innocents in their first proclamation.

While the first round of the operation for the eradication of N17 seems to have ended, after Xeros' testimony, the first witnesses are expected to be subpoenaed, a procedure to take place after the August 15 holiday.

As the To Vima newspaper mentioned, dozens of people will be called to testify before the special examining judge, while the whole process is expected to take quite some time.

The witness testimonies are considered of high priority at present, and thus additional testimonies from N17 suspect members in Corydallos have been postponed.

Meanwhile, the attorneys of Theologos Psaradelis may appeal for his release, since according to Savvas Xeros' testimony, the 58-year-old man is not a member of November 17.

The absence of other substantial evidence incriminating Psaradelis, i.e. fingerprints, letters, allows us to seriously consider and create sound foundations to appeal for his release, stated Psaradelis' attorney, Dimitris Zotos.

[03] SMALL DROP AT THE ASE
