[05] LOVE IS STRONGER THAN TERRORISM

    Athens, 30 September 2001 (19:23 UTC+2)

The reprobation of the entire Muslim world due to the terrorist strike on the US, was condemned today by the Archbishop of Athens and all of Greece, Christodoulos, speaking in the Church of St. Nikolaos of Anakasa.

"It is unjust, there is no collective responsibility. This was practiced in other eras, where one was to blame, and a hundred paid the price. The just course of action is for the perpetrator or perpetrators to be found. Besides, we must not let hatred nest in our hearts and suspicion rule against a whole world which is moderate", he mentioned characteristically.

With Christ's urging "love thy enemy" as the basis of his speech, he stressed that "Christians are called to love with all the power of our hearts even those who harm us or those who we suspect might harm us. Because love is a greater force than violence and terrorism". [06] NEW DEMOCRACY PREACHES A RETURNS TO THE PAST

    Athens, 30 September 2001 (18:16 UTC+2)

The content of the press conference held this afternoon in Thessaloniki by the President of New Democracy, Mr. Karamanlis, was commented on by the Government Spokesperson, Dimitris Reppas, who pointed out that the people trust PASOK and reject the preaching of New Democracy of returning to the past.

"The people look to the future. They ask for more development and prosperity. They ask for the better organization and functioning of the social state. They ask for the strengthening of the country's international position. They ask for the modernization of the land. They ask for constant renewal and change in political life. These are guaranteed by the Prime Minister, the government and PASOK", said Mr. Reppas and added "all that the leader of New Democracy can guarantee is a defeat in the next elections".

[07] THERE ARE NO SUSPECT LISTS

    Thessaloniki, 30 September 2001 (17:56 UTC+2)

What has been reported over the past few days about Greek suspect lists is not true, while increased worries about pockets of support for bin Laden in our country have no founding, stressed Minister of Public Order Michalis Chrysochoidis in an interview given to the "Typos tis Kyriakis" newspaper.

In more detail, the Minister noted: "Really, there has been a lot of talk about lists with suspects lately, without this being true. If the cooperation of the Greek Police in the framework of investigations for the solving of the terrorist attack on the US or for the prevention of other such actions is being insinuated, of course there is cooperation on our part. The Greek authorities, as most authorities around the world I would imagine, are performing investigations in order to contribute to the effective fighting off of terrorism, in cooperation with more specialized agencies, such as Interpol and Europol. But there are no indications to this day of any kind, to justify any increased worries of pockets of support for bin Laden in Greece".
