[01] WOMEN AND TOMORROW'S EUROPERhodes, 2 June 2001 (17:05 UTC+2)A three-day meeting of European women opened in the southeastern Aegean island of Rhodes yesterday. The meeting "Tomorrow's Europe - Women in action" is organized by Euro-deputy and president of the International Organization for the Promotion of Women in Europe Rodi Kratsas, with the support of the ministries of culture and foreign affairs. Fifty women from European Union countries, scientists and civil society representatives will meet at the Palace of the Knights in Rhodes to discuss issues like "Globalization and the EU", "The new European Model", "The new European identity" and "Bio-technology and Ecological conscience". In the meeting will participate among others, former Polish prime minister Hannah Suskoska, former French minister Yvette Rundie, Maria Soares, president of the Prodignitate Institute and wife of former Portuguese president Mario Soares, Serbia's social affairs minister Gordana Matskovje, UNESCO's good will ambassador and president of the Institute for the Child and the Family Marianna Vardinoyiannis and princess Katherine of Yugoslavia. [02] WORLD CONFERENCE ON FISHERIES IN ATHENSAthens, 2 June 2001 (17:42 UTC+2)The 4th annual meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) that was activated by the General Fisheries Council for the Mediterranean (GFCM), under the umbrella of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), will open in Athens on Monday. The meeting will last until June 7 and it will be held in the Greek capital after a proposal made to the GFCM by Greek minister of agriculture Giorgos Anomeritis. In the meeting will participate EU representatives and GFCM member-states namely, Greece, Albania, Algeria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Monaco, Morocco, Romania, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and Yugoslavia. Also, present will be UN environment program representatives as well as observers representing Greenpeace, CIHEA, the International Committee for the protection of tuna fish in the Atlantic, the International Committee for the scientific exploration of the Mediterranean, and the WWF. [03] TWINNING OF FOUR BALKAN MUNICIPALITIESThessaloniki, 2 June 2001 (17:44 UTC+2)The first step for a fourfold twinning was made by the mayors of Paralia in Pieria, northern Greece, Bjala in Bulgaria, Sarkoj in Turkey and Pitesti in Romania within the framework of a special event organized in the municipality of Paralia. The four mayors signed a protocol and agreed to develop stable and permanent cooperation relations based on honest dialogue, friendship and mutual understanding. In the protocol text it is stressed that the four mayors namely, Greek Christos Vogiatzis, Bulgarian Ilian Zonev, Turk Suleiman Altinok and Romanian Joseph Serbureanu believe that good neighborly relations and peaceful coexistence in the wider Balkan region are necessary precondition for the promotion of economic, social and cultural development. [04] CONFERENCE ON SEA TRANSPORTATION SAFETYChios, 2 June 2001 (16:59 UTC+2)Seventy Greek and foreign scientists will participate in the 2nd International Conference organized in the island of Chios on June 7-9 by the Aegean University shipping and business services department. The scientists will present their views as well as documents and proposals on "The safety of sea transportation". The issues that will be discussed are the high safety standards in the European passenger and ferry boats and the prevention of sea accidents. [05] COUNCIL OF EUROPE DEPUTIES TO SANTORINIAthens, 2 June 2001 (16:28 UTC+2)Greek parliament president Apostolos Kalkamanis will be in the Aegean island of Santorini on June 5 to open the conference on "The quality of life in the 3rd millennium" that will take place on June 4-6. In the conference, organized by the Greek parliament in cooperation with Council of Europe environment and agriculture committee, will participate 120 Council of Europe deputies. Invitations to attend the conference have been sent to university professors, specialists and personalities from Greece and abroad like former Soviet Union president Michail Gorbatchev. The issues under discussion concern the environment in relation to the quality of life, sustainable development, the effects of economic development on the environment, new production, trade and marketing methods, technological progress and human values in the new millennium etc. [06] STUDENT PROTEST FOR THE RETURN OF THE PARTHENON MARBLESLondon, 2 June 2001 (16:20 UTC+2)Twenty students, among them Greeks who are studying in London, formed a human chain outside the British Museum on Thursday calling for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece. The peaceful protest surprised the visitors of the museum and the heads of its security. Among the students, who were chanting slogans for the "Return of the Parthenon Marbles to where they belong", were three from Spain, three from Britain and one from Iceland. Before leaving the museum the students stated that they will continue their effort for the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Greece.
