    [01] SIMITIS PARTICIPATES IN THE EUROPEAN SOCIALIST PARTY CONFERENCE

    Stockholm 5 June (MPA)

    The European Socialist Party Conference opens in Malmoe, Sweden today to deal with the EU Summit meeting in Amsterdam and with problems concerning the European economic and monetary union.

    In the conference participates Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis who yesterday met with his Swedish counterpart and presented to him Greece's firm positions regarding the Aegean and the Cyprus issue.

    [02] THE TWO-DAY MEETING OF THE BALKAN FOREIGN MINISTERS IN THESSALONIKI IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE

    Thessaloniki 5 June (MPA)

    Political analysts see the two-day Balkan Foreign Ministers' meeting that will be opened in Thessaloniki next Monday, as an event of great importance for peace and security in south-eastern Europe.

    In the meeting will participate, apart from the Foreign Ministers of the seven Balkan countries, delegations from at least 20 states and international organizations. The Greek delegation will be headed by Foreign Minister Theodoros Pangalos.

    [03] A GREEK PARLIAMENT DELEGATION IS VISITING ALGERIA

    Algiers 5 June (MPA)

    A Greek Parliament delegation, headed by governing party of PASOK deputy and President of the Parliamentary Group for the Greek-Arab friendship mr.Giorgos Kirkos, is in the capital Algiers to observe the Parliamentary elections that are being held in Algeria today.

    The delegation will visit polling stations and will observe the vote counting process.

    [04] THE SOLUTION OF THE CYPRUS PROBLEM WILL BE AT THE CENTER OF THE TALKS IN WASHINGTON

    Washington 5 June (MPA)

    The solution of the Cyprus problem will be at the center of the talks Cypriot Foreign Minister Yiannakis Kasoulides will have in Washington with US Secretary of State ms.Albright.

    In statements he made to MPA, mr.Kasoulides welcomed the US decision for the appointment of a special envoy to Cyprus.

    [05] RICHARD HOLBROOKE IS THE US ENVOY TO CYPRUS

    Washington 5 June (MPA)

    US State Department spokesman Nicolas Burns announced the appointment of Richard Holbrooke to the position of the US President special envoy to Cyprus.

    Mr.Burns stated that mr.Holbrooke's appointment shows the interest of the United States and President Clinton in the efforts for the solution of the Cyprus problem and also that Washington fully supports the efforts made by UN Secretary General to reach a solution to the problem.

    [06] ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT AGAINST BERISHA

    Tirana 5 June (MPA)

    An assassination attempt against Albanian President Sali Berisha was made last night in the town of Rashbuli near Durres during a pre-election campaign rally.

    According to the state television, the attack occured while President Berisha was speaking to a crowd of his supporters when an individual threw a grenade against him. The attacker was unsuccessful in his attempt and was arrested by the President's personal guard.

    [07] THE NEW FRENCH GOVERNMENT IS SWORN-IN TODAY

    Paris 5 June (MPA)

    The new French government will be sworn-in today. The names of the cabinet members were announced yesterday by Socialist Prime Minister Lionel Jospin.

    As it was expected, the communists got two government ministries while the Greens got the Ministry of the Environment. The new government is small in size and flexible and among its members are many women.
