  • [01] KARAMANLIS-ERDOGAN TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION Right-wing main opposition party of New Democracy leader Kostas Karamanlis had a telephone communication with Turkey's Prime Minister Rejep Tayyip Erdogan today.

    Mr. Karamanlis telephoned Mr. Erdogan who wished him good luck in the elections and said that they will speak again on Monday.

  • [02] THESSALONIKI AND ISTANBUL WILL BE CLOSER Greece and Turkey will proceed with the drawing up of a joint action program for the development of the Thessaloniki-Istanbul rail and road axis. The joint action program will be discussed and agreed upon in a special meeting of specialists in Istanbul i n June 2004.

    According to the Athens newspaper "Imerisia", the development of a common database, a geographic information system (GIS) and an Internet site by September 2004 were decided in the first meeting of the Managing Committee for the development of the Thessa loniki-Istanbul European Corridor.

    These are the first steps for the materialization of a relevant Cooperation Agreement signed by Greek and Turkish government ministers in Athens in January.

  • [03] GAINS IN THE ASE Gains were recorded in the Athens Stock Exchange today. The general index rose to +0.77% at 2489.38 points, while the volume of transactions was at 242.6 million euros.

    Of the stocks trading today, 214 had gains and 84 had losses, while the value of 94 stocks remained unchanged.

  • [04] OUT OF OPERATION THE CHECK-IN SYSTEM AT ATHENS' INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT The check-in system at Athens' "Eleftherios Venizelos" International Airport was temporarily out of operation at noon today and as a result hundreds of people scrimmaged round the check-in desks.

    Also, there was tension between passengers and airport employees as many passengers had tickets but were left out of the airplanes.

  • [05] TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN PAPANDREOU AND ERDOGAN Governing Socialist Party of PASOK leader Giorgos Papandreou had a telephone communication with Turkish Prime Minister Rejep Tayyip Erdogan who wished him success in Sunday's parliamentary elections.

    According to information, Mr. Erdogan expressed the certainty that the good climate in bilateral relations will continue after the elections.

    Mr. Papandreou thanked Mr. Erdogan and reiterated his proposal for mutual armaments' cuts.

  • [06] STATEMENT BY MAGRIOTIS ON THE ISRAELI SUPREME COURT DECISION Greek Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Magriotis expressed absolute satisfaction regarding Israel's Supreme Court decision to reject the appeals made against the recognition of Patriarch Erineos A' of Jerusalem.

    In a statement he made, Mr. Magriotis said that this fact is a very positive development, which removes the last obstacle regarding the recognition of the Patriarch of Jerusalem.

    The Deputy Foreign Minister underlined the coordinated efforts made by the Greek government and the Council for the Greeks Living Abroad, SAE, which contributed greatly to the successful conclusion of the issue.
