[01] STING'S CONCERT IN THESSALONIKI
Singing songs from his latest album "Brand New Day" and many
of his earlier hits, as the singer of the legendary group the
Police, rock superstar Sting roused the audience in the concert he
gave in Thessaloniki yesterday evening.
Sting communicated with his fans immediately and in a very
direct way. He never stopped saying "thank you" in Greek and urged
the people to dance, while he sang all his great hits.
Over 200 people worked for the concert that drew a large
audience.
[02] SIMITIS: EUROPE MUST BE BUILT WITH THE ACTIVE PARTICIPATION
OF ITS PEOPLES
The need to build Europe with the active participation of its
people in order to serve society was stressed by prime minister
Kostas Simitis, speaking in the one-day conference on "The future
of Europe and Greece" organized by the Greek Center for European
Studies.
Europe cannot be built without the participation of the
European society, stressed the prime minister and added that a
broad-based democratic dialogue should get underway with the
immediate participation of the citizens and every political and
social force. He said that a Europe should be built that will be
able to effectively face the problems of globalization and the
challenges for a better and more fair world.
The prime minister also said that a new balance must be found
after the establishment of the monetary union and the single
European currency.
[03] THE GREEK NATIONAL ECONOMY UNDERSECRETARY WILL VISIT RUSSIA
Undersecretary of national economy Yiannis Zafiropoulos will
be on a visit to Russia on July 19-August 1 accompanied by 30
Greek businessmen.
Very positive investment prospects and economic cooperation
can be found in Russia in the sectors of energy, transport-
telecommunications, tourism, computers, banking, food and
beverages, vegetables, juices and plastics.
Business meetings will be held under the auspices of the
economic and trade affairs office of the Greek embassy in Moscow.
[04] THE ASE PLUNGED UNDER THE 2.500 POINTS MARK
The Athens Stock Exchange plunged under the 2.500 points mark
today. The general index dropped to -2.85% at 2.435,65 points,
while the volume of transactions was small at 116.30 million Euro
or 39.630 billion drachmas.
Of the stocks trading today, the overwhelming majority,
namely 259, recorded losses and 68 had gains, while the value of
52 stocks remained stable.
[05] SIMITIS LEAVES FOR MOSCOW ON SUNDAY
Prime minister Kostas Simitis leaves for Moscow on Sunday,
July 15 for the formal presentation of the Olympic Games
preparations that will be made by "Athens 2004" organizing
committee president Ms. Yianna Angelopoulou-Daskalakis.
As it was announced today by government spokesman Dimitris
Reppas, the prime minister will meet on Monday with the newly
elected International Olympic Committee, IOC, president and on
Tuesday he will have a meeting with Russian president Vladimir
Putin.
Present in the Olympic Games preparations presentation will
be ministers of foreign affairs Giorgos Papandreou and culture
Evangelos Venizelos.
[06] REPPAS: WE SHOULDN'T POLITICIZE THE STOCK MARKET
We shouldn't turn politics into a stock market issue or the
stock market into a political issue, stated government spokesman
Dimitris Reppas, reiterating that the stock market should operate
autonomously.
Mr. Reppas pointed out that economy today is at a much better
level compared to the past and this fact is acknowledged by
international organizations as well. He attributed the inflation
increase to the price hikes in fruits and vegetables and
reiterated that this increase was coincidental.
Finally, the government spokesman expressed the belief that
the upward tendency of inflation will be reversed in September. He
said that the budget is being implemented reliably and gave the
assurance that it will be a surplus budget.
[07] STOLEN ANCIENT OBJECTS WERE RETURNED BY MAIL
Two US citizens returned small-sized ancient Greek objects
that had been stolen many years ago by their parents during their
visits to archaeological sites in Greece. The objects were
returned by mail to the Greek embassy press office in Washington.
The two Americans decided to return them after the death of
their parents.
[08] NO GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IN THE PATRIARCHATE OF JERUSALEM
There is no intervention on behalf of the Greek government in
the selection of the Patriarch of Jerusalem, stated government
spokesman Dimitris Reppas, stressing that it follows a policy of
principles.
He said that the procedure for the election of the Patriarch
is known. Namely, the list with the candidates is submitted to the
authorities in the region, in this case to the Israeli
authorities.
There is no question of any intervention on behalf of the
Greek side, said Mr. Reppas, adding that Greece respects the
autonomy of the election procedure. Mr. Reppas stated that the
Greek government follows a policy of principles because it wants
the Patriarchate to continue to fulfill its mission.
[09] THE 8TH WORLD CONFERENCE OF PAN-MACEDONIAN ASSOCIATIONS IN
PIERIA
The 8th World Conference of Pan-Macedonian Associations and
the 55th Conference of the US-Canada Pan-Macedonian Association
will open at Alexandrion Institute in Litochoro, Pieria on July 12-
16.
Alexandrion Institute president and conference organizing
committee president Petros Mitoulis stated to MPA that everything
is ready for the conference in which will participate a total of
500 delegates and 2.000-3.000 observers. Mr. Mitoulis stated that
the most important thing is the participation of more than 300
young delegates from Australia, America, Canada, Europe, and
Africa.
The goal of the conference will be the orientation,
communication and synchronization of the Pan-Macedonian
associations with modern times.
[10] 1ST WORLD CONFERENCE OF EVRITANIANS LIVING ABROAD
The 1st World Conference of Evritanians living abroad will be
held in Karpenisi on July 13-15 organized by the local prefecture.
The conference on "Evritania-Prospects for development" will
include a number of entities concerning the historical course of
the local people both in Greece and abroad and the region's
economic, cultural and tourist development.
[11] THE GENERAL SECRETARY FOR THE GREEKS LIVING ABROAD VISITS
MARSEILLES
General secretary for the Greeks living abroad Dimitris
Dollis will visit the French city of Marseilles tomorrow to be
present in the inauguration of the new privately owned offices of
the Greek community, as the General Secretariat for the Greeks
living abroad has contributed a considerable amount for the
purchase of the new offices.
On the occasion of his visit, Mr. Dollis will have contacts
with leading members of the Greek community in the French city.
Among others, he is scheduled to visit the Association of Greeks
in Marseilles, the French-Greek Library, and the Greek school,
while he will also meet with city mayor Jean-Claude Gaudin.
