[03] US EMBASSY TO HOLD INTERNATIONAL TOURISM EVENT IN ATHENSWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2Athens, 28/11/1999 (MPA) Delegates from 31 countries are expected to attend an international tourism infrastructure conference to be held by the United States embassy in Athens next week, between December 1-3.The conference aims at bringing closer US companies and firms from Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Georgia, Greece, Estonia, FYROM, Spain, Israel, Italy, Croatia, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Palestine, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Sweden, Turkey and Finland. The US delegation will include representatives from the Commerce and State Departments, Export-Import Bank, the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) and US ambassadors from around the world. Originally to be held in Thessaloniki, the conference was postponed earlier in the year due to the crisis in Yugoslavia. According to US ambassador to Athens Nicholas Burns, Greek-American economic relations were steadily expanding after starting from a low level. He said that US companies were soon expected to show their interest in the Greek market, which they viewed as fast growing and with a healthy outlook linked to its anticipated entry into the euro zone. [07] GREECE IS WORLD'S WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2Athens, 28/11/1999 (MPA) Greece's Akakios Kakiashvilis set a world record in the snatch and won all three gold medals in the men's 207-pound class Saturday at the World Weightlifting Championships.Kakiashvilis hoisted 414 pounds in the snatch in becoming Greece's first overall champion at the meet. More than 8,000 fans at the Peace and Friendship Stadium cheered the lifter as he received his medals. He was joined by Greece's Leonidas Kokas, who won the bronze medal in the total and silver in the snatch. A.F. [B] BALKANS[09] DELEGATION OF GREEK INVESTORS MEET WITH ALBANIAN PREMIERWeb Posted: 15:57 GMT+2Tirana, 28/11/1999 (MPA) A delegation of Greek investors, accompanied by Athens' envoy in the country, met with new Albanian Prime Minister Ilir Meta who noted the importance of Greek investment for his country, which, as he said, is second only to the Italian investments.On his part, Greek ambassador to Tirana Alexandros Mallias stressed that the delegation's visit, along with previous investments in Albania, created the preconditions for Mr. Meta's successful visit to Athens scheduled for Dec. 22. Mr. Meta noted that the European Commission's approval of a feasability study regarding Albania proved that public order in his country is now at acceptable levels, therefore, "there is no danger for foreign investments." He also reassured Greek investors that there will be transparency on the part of the Tirana government as well as improvement of the existing legal framework. A.F.
